A traditional ballad of the sea or forebitter entitled "The Greenland Whale Fishery". Nick Ball on lead vocals and Matt Redman on banjo and vocals on deck of MV Minerva in the Atlantic ocean. AL Lloyd writes: This is the oldest—and many think the best—of surviving songs of the whaling trade. It had already appeared on a broadside around 1725, very shortly after the South Sea Company decided to resuscitate the then moribund whaling industry, and sent a dozen fine large ships around Spitsbergen and the Greenland Sea. The song went on being sung with small changes all the time to bring it up to date. We may take it that the incident described in the song is not historical but imaginary, a stylisation like those thrilling engravings of whaling scenes that were once so popular. But the song's pattern of departure, chase, and return home, was imitated in a large number of whaling ballads made subsequently. It is the ace and deuce of whale songs.

After a whale is harvested the whaling crew opens their house to the community for a short time and shares the whale which has been cooked. Everyone gets a bag of various parts of the whale, a roll and a cup of rice raisin pudding. In Barrow Alaska, Tony explains what the parts of the whale are, that are found in the bag and shares some basic, local whaling traditions.

DemocracyNow.org - Captain Paul Watson, founder of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society, has been released on bail in Germany following his arrest for possible extradition to Costa Rica on decade-old charges stemming from a confrontation between a Sea Shepherd vessel with shark fin poachers off the coast of Guatemala. Sea Shepherd is known for using nonviolent direct action to enforce international fishing and conservation laws, and has been highly recognized for its anti-whaling efforts. Sea Shepherd continues to maintain that Watson's arrest was politically motivated and is calling on its supporters to come together in a day of action on Wednesday when the Costa Rican President Laura Chinchilla visits Germany. Watson joins us from Frankfurt. "We've never injured anybody," Watson says. "The most powerful weapon in the world as far as I'm concerned is the camera, so we go into battle armed with cameras. ... Right now 19 million sharks a year are being destroyed to feed the shark...
