Panel discusses Obama's 'unconscionable', win or lose timetable for US troops in Afghanistan

New York Times Washington correspondent, David Sanger, author of a soon-to-be-released book on the Afghan war, notes that when President Obama ordered a troop surge in Afghanistan in 2009, with a firm timetable for withdrawal, he did so with the stated intention, that win or lose, the troops would be withdrawn by the set deadline. This unfortunate fact prompted a panel discussion as to whether the President's decision was "conscionable" or not. Of course, the word "conscionable", does not exist when it comes to the President's political aspirations, but that's besides the point. The panel also discussed some other significant points.

This hike is all about the destination, from which you'll have striking views in every direction, including, perhaps most gripping of all, straight down. Turn a complete circle and you'll be able to see any number of Yosemite landmarks, including Tenaya Lake, Half Dome, Mt. Hoffman, Sentinel Dome, North Dome, and bits of Cathedral Rocks and El Capitan, plus Merced Lake and dozens of peaks you probably won't be able to name.

France's new president says nearly all French troops will leave Afghanistan by the end of 2012. Francois Hollande made a surprise visit to Afghanistan this week. New Afghan recruits are now undergoing training in Kabul as the country prepares to take over security responsibilities in the face of NATO's imminent withdrawal. The recruits arrived at the Afghan National Army's main training center, the Kabul Military Training Center (KMTC), on the outskirts of the capital, that offers 16-week basic infantry training along with other basic courses. The new recruits have come from all over the country to form the basis of a professional Afghan army of 200000 men. "I joined up to defend my country, my pride and my family," one recruit from Kapisa Province said. The time left for them is short. Afghan forces are to take control in less than two years as NATO has pledged to withdraw in 2014. During the training, on the parade ground as they receive their first orders, the new recruits do not look very imposing, but more like teenagers on a school trip.
