Geert Hofman is a lecturer at Howest, University College of West-Flanders, the host of this TEDx. He is a philosopher by education, a computer scientist by profession. He was the project lead of an exploratory research project into the different aspects and possibilities of emergent collectives. In his talk he tries to clarify why emergent collectives are so crucial in this day and age, and what might be interesting avenues to develop in the near future to realize the full potential of this interesting evolution.

Lies Vanhaelemeesch, Michael Gaillez and Kurt Callewaert are lecturers at Howest, University College of West-Flanders, specializing respectively in innovation, programming and mathematics. The were part of a team that conducted an exploratory research project focused on emergent collectives under the project lead of Geert Hofman, curator of this TEDx. The question they are trying to answer is the following: how are governments, businesses and educational institutions leveraging the new technological possibilities? In this talk they each focus on a specific aspect of the environment in which emergent collectives function. Lies Vanhaelemeesch imagens a story about a traditional entrepreneur confronted with new emerging technologies. Michael Gaillez describes how governements think about those same technologies and how they could use these. Kurt Callewaert tells the story of how emergent collectives can be constructed once the new collaboration technologies get integrated into education.

Bernard Lietaer, author of The Future of Money, is an international expert in the design and implementation of currency systems. He has studied and worked in the field of money for more than 30 years in an broad range of capacities including as a Central Banker, a fund manager, a university professor and a consultant to governments in numerous countries, multinational corporations and community organizations. He co-designed and implemented the convergence mechanism to the single European currency system and served as president of the Electronic Payment System at the National Bank of Belgium. He co-founded and managed GaiaCorp, a top performing currency fund whose profits funded investments in environmental projects. He is currently a Research Fellow at the Center for Sustainable Resources of the University of California at Berkeley. Charles Petrie is a retired researcher of Stanford University, specializing in semantic networks and logic. He is currently guest professor at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and at the Karlsruhe University. He is also former editor-in-chief, retired now and currently editor of the "Peering Column" of the IEEE Internet Computing journal. He has introduced the concept of emergent collectives in the context of Internet based collaboration. In this talk he looks at the applicability of these concepts in the realm of disaster relief organization.
