The Amazon Basin is the part of South America drained by the Amazon River and its tributaries that drains an area of about 6915000 square kilometres (2670000 sq mi), or roughly 40 percent of South America. The basin is located in the countries of Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Guyana, Peru, and Venezuela. The Amazon rain forest is the largest in the world, covering about 8235430 km² (3179720 sq mi) with dense tropical forest. As much of the Amazon is unexplored, many of its indigenous plants and animals are unknown. Plant growth is dense and the variety of animals living is comparatively more because of the heavy rainfall and the dense forests covered with huge evergreen and coniferous forests. The forests are in fact so thick that the dense "roof" created by the leaves and branches does not allow the sunlight to reach the ground. The ground remains dark and damp. Only shade tolerant trees and vegetation may grow here. Orchids and bromeliads use trees and other plants to get...
The importance locally grown food in North Carolina

Larry from Peaceful River Farm shares about his passion for local, organic produce. In this recording he talks about how this produce is not just for health, but also for the economy. He points out that how/where we buy our food is "voting with our pocketbook" for a more logical and sustainable North Carolina, but I think that this talk has wisdom for any location as the same principles apply.

Southlands Heritage Farm - Vancouver, Canada

Note: This entire video was filmed in one afternoon. None of it was posed. Southlands Heritage Farm is owned by the Maynard family; Rick, Jennifer and their 3 sons Telf, Tik and Jordan. We have lived in the Southlands neighbourhood for generations, but the idea of creating 'Southlands Farm' as it is today wasn't conceptualized until the spring of 2008. Spearheaded by Jordan, our original vision was to intensively farm our family backyard in a sustainable way to demonstrate to neighbours that true food security is possible within the city. We felt awkward in our first summer as we took turns sitting on the roadside selling our produce and eggs to passers-by. Soon Diana from down the road joined in our lemonade-stand-type business. She sat with us and sold her famous pies, jams, and cookies. Other neighbours soon joined in the market too, selling their home-made or -grown delicacies. Volunteers came down to help us out, and we started to grow! Three years later we expanded the farm...

Jeff 4 Justice chats with filmmakers Laurie York & Carmen Goodyear about their filmmaking career from their acclaimed documentary Freedom To Marry to their new film "Women On The Land: Creating Conscious Community." Their new film highlights the work of women of this Northern California coastal community over the past forty years. The film opens with archival footage of women who founded "Country Women" in the 1970's, the extremely successful feminist publication and how-to magazine for women's self-sufficiency. Featuring the work women in this community have done to care for the environment of our coastal land and sea over the years, the film then follows the lives of women farming now and explains why the sustainable, organic, local food movement is essential in our current world of dwindling natural resources and economic decline. They also discuss the ladies involvement with Occupy Mendocino. Follow the works of Laurie York & Carmen Goodyear at www.youtube.com freedomtomarry.tv...

www.fullcircle.com - Interview with Full Circle partner Herbert Family Organic Farm. The Herbert Family has been farming in Hollister since 1868 when James Hudner purchased land from Colonel Hollister at the beginning of the town's development. The land as well as the farming business has been passed down from generation to generation to the present owners, Pat & Patti Herbert. In 1968 after the death of their father, brothers Phil and Pat took over running the family farm. In 1985, Pat and his wife Patti bought out Phil's share of the business. Since then they have been the sole managers of the farm. In 1986, concern developed in the US public over the use of Alar on apples. A 60 minutes investigation showed levels of the chemical in apple bi-products. This brought the toxic effects of herbicides into the forefront. "Back then it was just the way you did things," recalls Pat. "No one told us we could be poisoning people with our produce. After that we stopped spraying." By 1989 Pat...
