Als im Jahr 1855 aus der Pflanze erstmals Kokain-Pulver gewonnen wurde, stieg die Nachfrage. Ursprünglich als Narkotikum eingesetzt, erklärte Sigmund Freud die Droge zum Heilmittel gegen Depression und Impotenz. 1914 wurde sie als Rauschmittel für illegal erklärt. Doch in den 1970er Jahren wurde der Missbrauch durch südamerikanische Drogenkartelle weiter vorangetrieben. Um die erhöhte Verbreitung zu bekämpfen, startete US-Präsident Ronald Reagan den "Krieg gegen Drogen".
