The second day of Sanja Matsuri. Many different neighborhoods throughout Tokyo parade their Mikoshi (portable Shinto shrines) throughout the Asakusa district. It is a great honor to help hold up the Mikoshi for your neighborhood, and spots in the front are most highly prized. After a certain period of time, new people will relieve their peers and take over holding the Mikoshi. Each Mikoshi originates at the Sensoji temple and works it way around Asakusa and finds its way back at the temple in the evening. www.japan-guide.com
