On April 7, 2012, the Roswell Flight Test Crew gave a presentation at Norwescon 35 in Seattle, Wash., entitled "Own a Drone: Build and Fly Your Own UAV." Aimed at the novice interested in multirotor FPV flying, their talk covered the basics: motors, electronic speed controllers, batteries, video transmitters and receivers, telemetry systems, and more. Professionally recorded and edited by MediaFX Video Production, it provides an introduction for beginners who want to learn the fundamentals.

While attending Norwescon 35 in April 2012, the Roswell Flight Test Crew commandeered one of the hotel's glass elevators and used it, along with a micro-sized quadcopter, to demonstrate the first principle of Albert Einstein's Theory of Special Relativity. The video was captured with cameras -- including a GoPro Hero and a Sony NEX 5N -- attached to the elevator with hockey tape.

En route to the Winthrop Balloon Roundup, the Roswell Flight Test Crew made an early morning stop at the "Maryhill Stonehenge," a full-sized, astronomically aligned replica of the original. Constructed over more than a decade (1918-1929), it was the first memorial in the United States to honor those killed in World War I. The interior time lapse was captured with a Samsung Q10, and the exterior time lapse was recorded using a GoPro Hero2. The aerial video was captured by RQCX-3 "Raven" flying FPV with two GoPro Heroes attached -- one facing forward, the other facing straight down.

The Roswell Flight Test Crew captured the "night glow" at the 2012 Winthrop Balloon Roundup by mounting a Sony NEX-5N with a SEL16F28 16mm f/2.8 Wide-Angle Lens on RQCX-3 "Raven," in place the GoPro Hero that she regularly carries aloft. The same camera/lens combination was used to record the real-time footage on the ground. The time lapse was recorded using a pair of Samsung HMX Q10 camcorders capturing images at half-second intervals.

The footage was captured by RQCX-3 "Raven," now equipped with a DJI NAZA flight control system, which provides exceptional stability. This video from the Roswell Flight Test Crew archives was captured at Rockaway Beach on the Oregon coast, early in our experimentation with FPV flying. Nothing dramatic happens -- just a gentle circuit up and back down the beach. This pre-dates all of our previously posted videos, and was an early success that helped lay the foundation for our later work.

October 14-16, 2011, the Roswell Flight Test Crew attended Northwest SARCon, a search and rescue conference held in the midst of the wilderness and the alpine villages that surround Mt. Hood -- the most-climbed mountain in North America. The conference combines extensive classroom learning opportunities with hands-on field exercises in the Mt. Hood National Forest. The crew captured aerial video of training that included shallow water crossing techniques, K9 trailing, 4x4 off-road vehicle operations, whitewater safety and survival, as well as a hover/hoist demonstration by a US Coast Guard Jayhawk helicopter.

The United States Sprint Boat Racing Association invited the Roswell Flight Test Crew to capture aerial footage of a race held in Tangent, Ore., on September 10. Named the "Field of Dreams," the track in Tangent is known to fans in the United States as the "Talladega of sprint boat racing" for its long straightaways. This event was a run-up to the national championship held in Port Angeles, Wash., the following weekend, which the Roswell Flight Test Crew also attended as a guest of Team Wicked.

On Sunday, September 4, the Roswell Flight Test Crew was in St. Helens, Ore., for the 2011 Portland Pirate Festival. Our drone aircraft, based on the Gaui 330x quadcopter, carried high-definition GoPro video cameras aloft to capture thunderous cannon demonstrations, a skirmish between bloodthirsty pirates and the King's Navy and the sprawling festival grounds.
