Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, a trio of brothers famous for their high-pitched singing on hits like "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever," died this week. Surviving Bee Gees brother Bary Gibb's famous Falsetto singing is part of a male musical tradition that includes Franki Valli and the Four Seasons, Curtis Mayfield, and Prince. Why don't women ever sing in a falsetto? Because they don't have to. The term falsetto has multiple definitions, but it most commonly refers to a vocal technique that allows men to reach the high registers that women can hit naturally. In anatomical terms, a falsetto voice results from the stretching of the vocal cords so thin that the mucous membranes remain mostly parted, instead of opening and closing fully as they do in one's natural singing voice. This results in a higher-pitched sound outside of full voice, but it comes with a loss of power and control. According to this description, both men and women can use "falsetto" voices for speaking or singing. But...

This is me having a go at singing Tragedy in the style of the Bee Gees on Rock Band 3. I'm by no means an expert singer, far from it. I just do this for your entertainment, enjoyment, whatever. With Falsetto vocals, this is no easy task, in fact in places I was struggling to keep a straight face, so that's why my voice wavers about quite a lot. To add to the difficulty, I have turned the vocals in game all of the way down, so I cannot hear the vocal master track. A bit like using a karaoke machine except with the original master recordings. The lead vocal may be too hot, but the app just does an export as a mix and I have to set it to where it won't drop out too much at it's lowest point, and the additional two tracks made finding a perfect balance impossible for me, as I am not good at that. Plus, my ears are burned out and my little blue $8 earphones kind of suck (I go through about a pair of any-price earphones a month, but these were my emergency pair). And of course I can't sing in the key the Bee Gee's did this song in, so I found one that was an ok key. But it had no BGs on it (no pun intended--well, maybe a little one). So I managed to stick them on with my four track VocaLive app that, like the 5 loaves and 3 fishes, somehow became 7. I am probably the unofficial world's worst backup singer--I immediately become tone-deaf and have to shut off all the other people's voices (which are usually just me), because I am distracted by the melody.
