First backcountry descent by rodel (luge sled) of Table Mountain, Wyoming, Jedediah Smith Wilderness. 2300ft (701m) vertical and 2.5miles (4.2k) length rideable. Maximum speed between 51 and 63mph (82-101kph) reduced to 39mph (63kph) in first .88mile (1.5k) at the first row of trees. Beautiful windless day (light gusts at summit). Temperatures began at slightly above freezing. My ride was a Torggler T115 rodel, steels waxed for the anticipated snow conditions. It performed beautifully. I carried and towed it where appropriate. I also added a shock-corded tool lanyard, a Squids 3102, with backup carabiner as a leash and tow cable. Had I lost contact with the rodel on the mountain side, it could have accelerated out of sight downslope to smash to bits or just plain be lost forever. Not good. It has been over 5 years since I last skied and almost 8 years since I've done any backcountry skiing of any kind. Loveland Pass is at 11990 feet above sea level and I hiked up to about 12500 feet. The skiing is patch in areas with other areas of sustained snow for up to 500 vertical feet. Snow conditions were about 3" of corn on top of a weak surface of older snow covering rocks and moss. The biggest factor was the altitude. Living down in the Florida in the dense air, humidity, and low elevation has made me have to acclimate once again to the high altitude of the mountains. As far as my skiing ability, I do not think I have lost much of any skill other than regaining ski fitness and my acclimation to higher altitudes.
