The Ruby language has a very robust and high-performance implementation on the JVM - JRuby. While JRuby by itself brings a lot of (implicit) benefits of the JVM to the Ruby world, the rest-of-the-world isn't without its share of excitement! Scala, Clojure, Mirah et al have a host of features which make them very expressive and powerful for certain classes of problems. For example, type-safety combined with the compilation phase bring in performance improvements. Or immutability allows for easy-to-reason-about concurrent implementations. Lazy evaluation allows for easier expression and solution of still another class of problems. And for situations requiring you to handle asynchronous situations, there are Actor libraries. With JRuby, there are two ways to leverage the benefits of these languages. Since everything boils down to classes (and typically, JAR-libraries), one can directly call into these libraries with Ruby's syntactic sugar-coating as well as the smooth-as-butter maven...

Two dynamical model simulations of the dataset from Tuesday Lake, Michigan, USA, sampled in 1984. This community contains 50 species and over 250 feeding relationships. Differential equations model the flow of energy between species. The graphs show log-transformed numerical abundance (N, individuals per metre cubed) against body mass (M, kg). The empirical measured N of primary producers is shown by green circles, invertebrates by blue squares and vertebrates by purple diamonds. Crosses show the model simulation population densities. The two graphs show simulation runs for different parameter sets. The left-hand plot uses model parameters that result in good model-data agreement. The right-hand plot uses model parameters that result in poor model-data agreement. The simulations and video were generated using the R programming language using the Gruyere (quicklizard99.github.com and Cheddar (quicklizard99.github.com packages.

But finally I don't get the pattern it is doing in the vimeo video as a result... (hmm... I thankful for any comments on that... just write it down) In the other videos I varied "speed 1" and "speed 2" and steps (in the loop). To vary the radius of the spinning points on the vinyl you have to go inside the following blocks: "circle 2 add x" and "circle 2 add y". Change the 3.3 (the factor of "overall r"). to weeks later: I programmed it in java and found the mistake. Even though the algorithm wasn't the right you still get a quiet esthetic result. enjoy

In this talk (which was recorded as a dry run for a seminar) I present a very brief introduction to the Python programming language from the point of view of someone wanting to perform data manipulation on geographic data. I outline what a GIS is (essentially the meeting point between computers and map-making) and cover some issues to do with raster data on the Earth's surface. I cover the importance of choosing your sampling wisely, how to generate contoured heigh plots, faux 3d-shared relief maps, slope and aspect plots. I discuss some simple de-noising strategies for freely accessible data and investigate a strange phenomenon in Oxfordshire.
