Eugene Vernon Pumphrey Gene Pumphrey, 85, went to be with the Lord this past April, in Empire, CA. He was born in Bakersfield, CA to Willard and Ethel Pumphrey. He served in the Navy Seabees, and was then active in music activities at Azusa Pacific University (then Pacific Bible College). He married Clara Wirth in 1951. Gene was a teacher, coach, musician, competitive runner, cyclist and minister. He was also a wonderful husband and father. In the 1960's he started the cross country program at Folsom High School and introduced road races in Folsom before running was popular. In the 1970's & 80's he taught, coached and was the music director at Greenleaf Friends Academy in Idaho. After retiring he went back to school and became a recorded minister in the Evangelical Friends Church, working with Clara, planting new churches in the Southwest. Gene and Clara moved to WestPoint, CA in 1991 and lived there almost 20 years. During this time he loved riding with the Erma's Diner Cyclists...
