Rethinking Anonymity in an Age of Increasing Technological Change

Anonymity is a significant ethical principle with historical and legal precedents for researchers. However, limits and degrees of anonymity are emerging in an age of rapid technological change, where new technology enables new types of social research by transforming research participants' and researchers' ways of doing. This presentation explores the problem of presenting rich, descriptive data on a unique, emergent social phenomenon while adhering to an ethical principle of anonymity. This presentation explores an appropriate degree of and limit to anonymity when reconciling the impact of research findings with political considerations for research participants, their organizations, the researcher and other research stakeholders. The data are drawn from five qualitative case studies of pedagogical technologists, who support the pedagogical aspect of teaching through information technology in schools, and who have been found only in a few, unique schools. Case data were collected...
Shaping Penn State's Learning Environment: Course/Learning Management System Review
In 2009, the provost and vice provost for information technology charged the eLearning Strategic Committee with developing a strategy for sustaining a common e-learning environment across the University. To accomplish this, the committee formed two subcommittees, pedagogical and technical, to explore the capabilities of several e-learning environments. As a result, ITS piloted Blackboard, Canvas, Desire2Learn, and Moodle. The pilot team is working with instructors, students, designers, technologists, and support staff to explore the capabilities of each of these applications within Penn State. This panel will provide an overview of the LMS review, accomplishments, assessment strategy, and the way forward.

Google + Marta Magnuson Instructional Technologist - Carthage College ABOUT THE SERIES: This series focuses on aligning technology with educational best practices. Innovative use of technology can excite the mind and reenergize the practice of teaching. However, at the core of higher education teaching and learning there must be an adherence to sound pedagogy. In this series we will explore technologies that have educational potential and provide examples of how they are being used at Carthage and the greater educational community. www.carthage.edu

Changing Practices and Changing Perspectives: Pedagogical Technologists in Schools: Pedagogical technologists are people who work in schools. In a traditional sense, they are neither teachers nor technicians. Their primary duty is to support the pedagogical aspect of teaching through IT and to help teachers and other school stakeholders to use technology to best support student learning. Many people are not familiar with the pedagogical technologist role because this role is emergent, and rare. Most schools do not employ one because most schools lack such a mature presence of IT in their curriculum where the pedagogical technologist can be supported and sustained. This presentation showcases five cases of pedagogical technologists in schools. Preliminary findings on how pedagogical technologists influence their schools' ways of working with and through technology will be presented.

In this task, I am paired with a student from Shanghai JIaotong University. We do not study the same disciplines yet we must explain our research clearly to each other in less than 50 words. As the video attests, we had difficulty conveying clearly my research. This was my 50-word blurb: I study special people in schools. These special people are called pedagogical technologists. Pedagogical technologists are neither teachers nor technicians. They influence how schools work with and through technology. The pedagogical technologist is an emergent role. Not every school has one. I will write four case studies about four technologists.

Pedagogical technologists are full-time para-coordinators of pedagogy and technology. They are not teachers in a traditional sense and they do not focus predominantly on supporting the technical aspects of teaching with information technology (IT). Their primary duty is supporting the pedagogical aspect of teaching through IT and helping teachers and other school stakeholders use technology to best support student learning, taking into account technological, pedagogical, content knowledge. These pedagogical technologists are drivers of school change through technology. The pedagogical technologist role in Hong Kong schools may be emergent, due in part to the increasing presence of IT in schools and changes to the specific ways that schools think about IT in education; in addition, only a number of schools have appointed pedagogical technologists. This study explores the role of selected pedagogical technologists and examines what they do to impact schools' ways of working with and...

Conceptual Framework for Pedagogical Technologist Study
Tags: Screencast Screenr pedagogical technologist learning instructional design designer hong kong hk university hku research phd schools technology change innovation framework study
This conceptual framework will be used to explain how a pedagogical technology impacts a school's ways of working with and through technology. The framework is an extension of the ecological metaphor for understanding school change and renewal through technology. The framework consists of two ecological layers: a local school ecology nested within a global ecology. Species populate this ecological system. At the center of the framework is the unit of analysis-cum-the invasive species to these ecologies, the pedagogical technologist. The pedagogical technologist affects the school's ways of working with and through technology through the pedagogical technologist's internal indicators, which include disposition, professional role, philosophy (ie values, beliefs and assumptions), professional experience, goals and vision, and technical, pedagogical and content knowledge. The pedagogical technologist is but one species in a school-level ecology with many biotic and abiotic species. The...

In this section, this researcher presents a conceptual framework for studying how a pedagogical technologist improves a school's ways of doing through technology. (Please see Figure 7. → prezi.com An overview and a rationale for the framework's components will be provided. The ways by which this model has been adapted for the context of those non-mainstream Hong Kong schools in the present study and by which this model has, at the conceptual level, addressed several limitations of traditional ecological models when applied to the Hong Kong non-mainstream school context, will also be provided.

From the 2004 CALI Conference for Law School Computing Audience: Faculty members, academic administrators, and technologists Technical Level: Focus will be on pedagogical issues and basic technology options, detailed knowledge of particular technologies not required The ABA accreditation rules now allow 1/3 of the credits for any classroom-based course to rest on work done through a full range of distance learning approaches and 12 credits of the total required for graduation to be earned in fully online courses. This new distance option poses several intersecting questions for most existing courses: 1) Are there components of this course that might be delivered effectively online or via disk? 2) Are there compelling reasons to attempt conversion of the entire course to a distance format? 3) How might one approach the conversion of all or part of the course for distance delivery? Drawing upon his experience in converting two upperclass electives (Copyright and Social Security Law)...
