The American Embassy in Skopje, Macedonia, sponsored a workshop for members of the media exploring the importance of their role and influence on society's perceptions. Over three days, Macedonian and Kosovar journalists, editors, reporters, bloggers and students from traditional print, TV and radio as well as new media discussed the challenges of responsible, professional reporting within the Balkans. Ambassador Paul Wohlers greeted the participants and officially opened the workshop. Highlighting the importance of a free press in any society, the Ambassador and trainers encouraged the media to report fully and fairly, and to choose their words wisely, with a mind towards how these words may affect the readers, for good or ill. Discouraged, Miller returned to New York. He realized that he needed to develop a unique sound, and decided to make the clarinet play a melodic line with a tenor saxophone holding the same note, while three other saxophones harmonized within a single octave. George T. Simon discovered a saxophonist named Wilbur Schwartz for Glenn Miller. Miller hired Schwartz, but instead had him play the lead clarinet. This cover of the traditional blues classic "Nobody knows you when you're down and out" brings me back to my teenager years, when one part of me listened to The Beatles with all their great hits (Just let me hear some of that Rock and Roll music) and the other part of me listened to John Mayall & The Bluesbreakers, featuring a young Eric Clapton (All your love). In between were The Rolling Stones (Walking the Dog). I was a teenager guitarplayer in a beatgroup, trying to play the blues. The biggest problem: my fingers couldn't follow that fast, what my brains were thinking, so it didn't sound that good, wha ha ha. But what the hell: music was fun and still is fun.
