Born in Jackson, Mississippi, United States,[3] Spann became known for his distinct piano style. Born to Frank Houston Spann and Josephine Erby. One of five children - three boys and two girls. His father played piano, non professionally, while his mother had played guitar with Memphis Minnie.[citation needed] Spann began playing piano by age of eight, influenced by his local ivories stalwart, Friday Ford. At the age of 14, he was playing in bands around Jackson, finding more inspiration in the 78s of Big Maceo Merriweather, who took the young pianist under his wing once Spann migrated to Chicago in 1946. Other sources say that he moved to Chicago when his mother died in 1947 playing the Chicago club circuit and working as a plasterer. Spann gigged on his own, and with guitarist Morris Pejoe, working a regular spot at the Tic Toc Lounge before hooking up with Muddy Waters in 1952.[2] Although he recorded periodically as a solo artist, Spann was a full-time member of the Muddy Waters...

"Living the Blues" explores the frustration, tragedy, and humor of inner city youth in pursuit of their dreams. The music helps them to weather the poverty and violence. Rock, Jazz, Reggae, Hip-Hop, Swing — they all come out of the blues. And people love this music because it can make you happy even when you're not. If you want to play the blues, you've got to understand, you've got to pay your dues. Shot on location in South Central Los Angeles, "Living the Blues" stars Galyn Gorg ("Dance Academy", "Nightingales", "Robocop II", "Mantis") and legendary blues guitarist and vocalist Sam Taylor, who started with Otis Redding in the 1950s and has worked with the biggest names in blues. Also starring are Michael Kerr, Martin Raymond, and Gwyn Gorg. By Marv Goldberg Based on interviews with Aaron Collins and Pete Fox ,, The Jacks/Cadets were Modern's top group in the mid-fifties, the West Coast answer to King's Otis Williams and the Charms. If a local hit started to break out in the Los Angeles market or if there was a chance to grab some action on a national hit (particularly one on a smaller label), the group would be rushed into the studio and their cover record immediately issued. Although both the Jacks and Cadets featured the same personnel, their lead singers differed: Willie Davis usually led the Jacks; Aaron Collins and Dub Jones fronted the Cadets. One thing about the Jacks/Cadets: they could sing! Most of their covers were far better than the originals. The origins of the Jacks go back to Los Angeles in the late 1940s and the formation of the Santa Monica Soul Seekers, a spiritual group. Baritone Lloyd McCraw came to LA, from Chicago, in 1947. His resume included time with the Dixie Hummingbirds and the Royal Four....

Booker T And The MGs - Green Onions Booker T. & the MG's is an instrumental R&B band that was influential in shaping the sound of southern soul and Memphis soul. Original members of the group were Booker T. Jones (organ, piano), Steve Cropper (guitar), Lewie Steinberg (bass), and Al Jackson, Jr. (drums). In the 1960s, as members of the house band of Stax Records, they played on hundreds of recordings by artists such as Wilson Pickett, Otis Redding, Bill Withers, Sam & Dave, Carla and Rufus Thomas and Johnnie Taylor. They also released instrumental records under their own name, such as the 1962 hit single "Green Onions".[1] As originators of the unique Stax sound, the group was one of the most prolific, respected, and imitated of their era. By the mid-1960s, bands on both sides of the Atlantic were trying to sound like Booker T. & the MG's.[2][3] In 1965, Steinberg was replaced by Donald "Duck" Dunn, who has played with the group ever since. Al Jackson, Jr. was murdered in 1975....

Zephyr was a blues-based hard rock band formed in 1969 in Boulder, Colorado by guitarist Tommy Bolin, keyboardist John Faris, David Givens on bass guitar, Robbie Chamberlin on drums and Candy Givens on vocals. Although the charismatic performances by Candy Givens were originally the focal point for the band, it was the flashy guitar work of Tommy Bolin that the band is best remembered for.[1] After Bolin left, he was replaced by Jock Bartley, and the band recorded the album Sunset Ride, their second for Warner Brothers Records. The album is still in print and is much loved by a small but loyal following. On Sunset Ride, Candy Givens displayed her gifts as a singer, composer, and harmonica player. The album was produced by David Givens who also authored the majority of the tunes. As a result of his stint with Zephyr, Bartley went on to a successful career with Gram Parsons and Firefall and drummer, Michael Wooten, went on to play for several years with Carole King. Various versions...
