TsukimiKai is an intergenerational group of predominately Japanese American artists, oral historians, educators, and scholars that share a goal: to explore and celebrate the parallel histories of Japanese Cubans and Japanese Americans. In August 2005, TsukimiKai brought a nineteen-person delegation of largely Japanese American social researchers, taiko drummers, Obon dancers, and a video crew to Cuba to exchange stories and information with Cuban Nikkei (persons of Japanese or Okinawan ancestry) in Havana, La Isla de la Juventud, Cienfuegos, and Trinidad. TsukimiKai conducted interviews with numerous Cuban Nikkei families, visited local historical sites, and presented a number of performances, including one at the annual Obon event on La Isla de la Juventud. (The Obon Festival is a traditional Japanese observance, an annual mid-summer celebration that honors the ancestors.) Based on this trip, we realized the importance of capturing these stories as oral histories, and sharing our...

Danzan Ryū, ("Sandalwood Mountain System", from a Chinese name for Hawaii) is a Ryū of jujutsu founded by Henry Seishiro Okazaki (1890--1951) in Hawaii. Seishiro "Henry" Okazaki incorporated not only traditional jūjutsu, but also Hawaiian Lua, Okinawan Karate, Eskrima, Kung Fu, and wrestling, as he began to synthesize the most effective aspects of these varies styles into an eclectic system that he called 'Danzan Ryū'. Okazaki used this name to honor his Chinese martial arts teacher, Wo Chong. The Chinese name for Hawai'i is T'an Shan (or in Japanese, Dan Zan) which translates as 'sandalwood mountain'. Hence the term Danzan Ryu means Hawaiian Style. In the late 1925 Seishiro Okazaki's Kodenkan Danzan Ryu was founded in Hawaii. The name Kodenkan may be translated as 'The School of the Ancient Tradition' or as 'The School in Which Senior Students Transmit the Tradition.' During WWII, Okazaki continued teaching and assisted the US military in creating a hand-to-hand combat...

The Lockheed SR-71 "Blackbird" was an advanced, long-range, Mach 3+ strategic reconnaissance aircraft.[1] It was developed as a black project from the Lockheed A-12 reconnaissance aircraft in the 1960s by the Lockheed Skunk Works. [url=en.wikipedia.org "Kelly" Johnson[/url] was responsible for many of the design's innovative concepts. During reconnaissance missions the SR-71 operated at high speeds and altitudes to allow it to outrace threats. If a surface-to-air missile launch was detected, the standard evasive action was simply to accelerate and outrun the missile.[2] The SR-71 served with the US Air Force from 1964 to 1998. Of the 32 aircraft built, 12 were destroyed in accidents, and none lost to enemy action.[3][4] The SR-71 has been given several nicknames, including Blackbird and Habu, the latter in reference to an Okinawan species of pit viper.[5] Since 1976, it has held the world record for the fastest air-breathing manned aircraft, a record previously held by the YF-12.

www.facebook.com Here's a basic explanation and demonstration of how to carry sai tucked in the obi (belt). Mind you, the ufuchiku (Okinawan policemen) didn't wear the kinds of belts that we do today in modern karate/kobudo. The traditional Okinawan belt was much wider and the ends of the belt didn't hang below the waist. (Similar to the belts worn by these festival performers www.japanguidebook.com The mainland policemen of feudal Japan carried tessen (single pronged truncheon) that was either tucked in their belts on the side or behind their back, much like the Okinawan policemen wore their sai. In my video, I demonstrate two ways to tuck sai into the obi. 1) Two sai on the side. And 2) One sai behind the back. Notice, that I have a total of four sai tucked in my belt. This was done for demonstration purposes only. Traditionally, usually a total of three sai might have been carried by ufuchiku. Two was the normal number.

Aoyagi (青柳). Aoyagi kata (青柳) also known as Seiryu can be translated as "Green Sauce". It was founded in 1.935 by two teachers, Mabuni Kenwa (摩文仁贤和) and Konishi Yasuhiro (小西康裕, 1.893-1.983) founder of the Shindo Jinen Ryu (神道自然流) now known as Ryobukai (良武会) in the year 1.933. In 1.935 the commanding general of the Imperial Japanese Army Konishi asked the teacher to develop defense techniques specific to the group of women who served in the Government Railways. At that time Konishi trained seriously Daito-ryu Aiki-Jujutsu (大东流合気柔术) with Master Ueshiba Morihei (植芝盛平), 6 years later established the official name of the famous Aikido (合気道or 合气道) after a see used different names such as Aiki-Jujutsu, Ueshiba-ryū, Asahi-ryū Aiki and Budo. Shinsei Ni (新生二). The kata Shinsei Ni (新生二) was created by Master Mabuni Kenei (摩文仁贤荣, February 13, 1918), still active as a tribute and continuity to the work of his father Mabuni Kenwa (摩文仁贤和). After the death of this in the year 1.952, Mabuni Kenei (摩文仁贤荣) took the leadership, two years later, the second generation as Soke of Shito-ryu Karate-do (空手道糸東流), this being the son greater. You might feel the Okinawan unique scale, off beat and tempo to dance. Usually support singers sing "Ha(p)! Ha(p)! Ha(p)! Ha(p)! Hai-ya! Hai-ya!" to fill and complete the folk song. The base phrase might sound like a part of a famous folk song in Okinawa as "Okinawa yoi toko, ichido wa oide.(it's...

I just filmed this video as a quick response to "Extreme Mixed Martial Arts hard body conditioning - Iron body training" www.youtube.com . This is an Okinawan "Iron Body" training device that is utilized in kiko (気功) practice. Its use was first recorded in a centuries old text called the Ekkin-Kyo (易筋经) which has been attributed to Daruma (達磨). However, the training (at least in its current form) most likely only dates as far back as the Ming dynasty. This training methodology traveled from China to Okinawa and was incorporated into several of the Ryukyu martial arts. This "Iron Body" kiko training is extremely effective. The portion of kiko training that uses this device is usually called "Dako" (打功) but it is also called the "Daruma exercise" (達磨運動). The device is used in a specific sequence and with a specific directionality depending on the area being tapped. This video won't be going into that level of detail and I merely want to show you the device...

Translation of kanji "annanko" is "Light from the South". The Kata's history is given and the kata is performed fast and slow at different angles and includes a slow walk through of the pattern. Bunkai is performed for the entire kata with an evidence based practice related to street assault & medical emergency department reports of violence. The Kata has at least 2 stories around its origins - both Taiwan related. One is that it was a fighting from native Taiwan and moved to Japan/Okinawa from there. The other, by historian John Sells (8th Dan), is that Kyan Chotoku (a Okinawan karate practitioner who lead to the founding of the Shorin styles) went for a time to Taiwan and upon returning to Okinawa, he began to teach a new kata called Ananku. This historical note suggest Chotoku had created it as a basic kata from techniques developed from or inspired by his Taiwan adventures. Japan marked on Tuesday (May 15) the 40th anniversary of the end of a United States military post-World World Two occupation of the Okinawan islands and the return of the territories to Japan. Yet despite the 40 years that have lapsed since the islands returned to Japanese rule, US military presence continues to be an issue in Japan's southernmost region. Celebrations were muted compared to 1972 when the people of Okinawa celebrated the return of their island to Japan after twenty seven years of US rule. At a simple ceremony, Japanese Prime minister Yoshihiko Noda promised peace and prosperity in the area. The United States and Japan announced earlier last month a revised agreement on streamlining the US military presence on Okinawa that will shift 9000 Marines from the southern Japanese island to Guam and other Asia-Pacific sites. Snags over Okinawa had raised questions about the viability of the Obama administration's strategy of shifting US forces from other regions to the...
