US Army soldiers of the 490th Civil Affairs Battalion - Charlie Company, are partnering with Ugandans to bring development to a volatile region. This US Army Reserve unit based out of Grand Prairie, Texas, but currently assigned to the Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA), at Camp Lemmonier, Djibouti, have been in this unstable region called Karamoja for the past four years, conducting veterinary civic action programs and offering valuable training to veterinary students in the region, to address the area's livestock health problems. The Army Civil Affairs Team, in partnership with the Ugandan Government, USAID, Makerere University, Uganda Peoples Defense Force - Civil Military Coordination Center (UPDF-CMCC), and various non-governmental organizations, are working to promote development in the region. On their current 5-day mission to West Africa, the visiting fifteen members of the United Nations Security Council delegation, co-led by Ambassador Susan Rice of the United States of America and Ambassador Mohammed Loulichki of Morocco, started the second day of their visit just outside Monrovia, at a United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) sponsored "Alternative Livelihood Project for Traditional Women". The project hosts three-month vocational training courses, which are managed by a Liberian nongovernmental organization. At the center, the women proudly displayed, to the visiting guests, the colorful fabrics they have been taught to process and tailor as part of the project's activities. The sales of the products regularly serve as a means of income generation for those previously involved in harmful practices to young girls and women. A group of secondary schools and youth groups in Trans-Nzoia are now set to boost food-production in their county following the launch of a greenhouse project for students.
