thefilmarchive.org February 29, 2012 In late February 2009, newly elected US President Barack Obama announced an 18-month withdrawal window for combat forces, with approximately 50000 troops remaining in the country "to advise and train Iraqi security forces and to provide intelligence and surveillance". General Ray Odierno, the top US military commander in Iraq, said he believes all US troops will be out of the country by the end of 2011, while UK forces ended combat operations on April 30, 2009. Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has said he supports the accelerated pullout of US forces. In a speech at the Oval Office on 31 August 2010 Obama declared "the American combat mission in Iraq has ended. Operation Iraqi Freedom is over, and the Iraqi people now have lead responsibility for the security of their country." Beginning September 1, 2010, the American operational name for its involvement in Iraq changed from "Operation Iraqi Freedom" to "Operation New Dawn." The remaining...

Simeon Ashe (d. 1662) was an English nonconformist minister of the Gospel and a member of the Westminster Assembly. Edmund Calamy (1600-1666) said of him that Ashe was, "a man of great sincerity, humility, benevolence, prudence, and patience: as eminently diligent in preaching the glorious gospel of the grace of God in season and out of season." When he died, it was said that the church had lost a choice pillar and that the city of London had lost an ancient, faithful minister. Ashe wrote this work, Divine Contentment, to demonstrate the Christian's duty in being submissive to God's providences. This is every Christian's holy and gracious duty in this life, and the manner of a Christian is found chiefly in his disposition of being in a holy frame of contentment. Ashe says in opposition to contentment, that "discontentment is to the soul, as a disease to the body. It puts it out of temper, and hinders its regular and sublime motions heaven-ward constantly." The divines who recommend...

Originally, I designed and built the SplinterBike as a £1 bet. After completing the initial challenge I created a second wooden bicycle which I have called SplinterBikeTwo. My good friend and No1 SplinterBike rider James Tully went on to set the 100% Wooden Bicycle Speed Record on Thursday 18th August 2011 achieving a best average two way combined run of 18.120 kph See: www.splinterbike.co.uk As a result of our achievements and the public's insatiable appetite for our project, the original SplinterBike went on display at the Victoria & Albert Museum London as part of the Power of Making exhibition (attracting 320703 visitors) and this summer it's going off to the British Transport Museum in Coventry on permanent loan. Although we did succeed in our challenge, despite a minuscule budget and a constant threat of rain on the big day, we feel that this concept has much more to give. I now have most of the components of SplinterBikeThree on the bench in preparation to defend our title...

On 12th May, the City of London police (and some of the met police too) were acting rather stupidly, randomly trying to throw cordons across a march of around 700 people, sometimes succeeding, sometimes failing, mostly pissing people off. As part of the 12M Global Day of Action that occurred in over 350 cities, around 700 protesters gathered at St Paul's to take a tour of the financial institutions responsible for much of the crisis. Throughout the 'Meet the 1%' march, City of London police repeatedly tried to slow and halt the march and there were clashes as people pushed through police lines. The tour concluded at the Bank of England where an assembly was held. Police ordered the assembly to disperse and when it refused they sent in squads to violently drag people off the steps and make around 11 arrests.
