Halima Kuku spoke with Eyes and Ears Nuba about the Sudan government's repeated attacks on its own civilians. She walked for four days, with her daughter Tabitha in her arms, to reach the Yida refugee camp in South Sudan. Random aerial bombs in her village, Famma, made it impossible for them to find food. Farmers throughout Southern Kordofan have been unable to plant, and if the government continues its airstrikes, there will be no harvest in October. The tens of thousands of men, women, and children living in the Nuba Mountains will starve. Halima's mother is blind and continues to hide in the caves. The Sudan government maintains humanitarian aid is not needed.

The May 17 United Nations deadline for Sudan and South Sudan to immediately cease all hostilities will soon pass, but the two countries have yet to reveal any intention to resume peace talks. On May 2, the UN Security Council and the African Union demanded that Sudan and South Sudan cease all hostilities within two weeks. The UN Security Council also demanded the two countries resume negotiations on oil, citizenship, borderline as well as on the Abyei region, requiring the two states to sign a peaceful agreement within three months. However, there have been no indicators suggesting that Sudan and South Sudan will abide by the peace resolutions within the prescribed time limit. Instead, both countries have set harsh terms for the continuation of peace talks. Rahmatalla Osman, the Sudanese Vice Foreign Minister, said that although the talks must eventually be restarted, certain conditions must first be met.

MaximsNewsNetwork: (www.MaximsNews.com ) 09 May 2012 UNTV: United Nations, New York - United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today (9 May) condemned a bomb explosion which occurred in the vicinity of a convoy of UN observers in Syria today, injuring several Syrian soldiers accompanying the delegation. The observers, part of the UN Supervision Mission in Syria (UNSMIS), were on their way from Damascus for a visit to the southern city of Dar'a, under Syrian army escort. They had crossed a military checkpoint on the road approaching the town when the improvised explosive device detonated, shortly before midday. Speaking to the United Nations General Assembly upon his return from his visit to India and Myanmar, the Secretary-General urged the Syrian Government and the opposition to "realize that we have a brief window to stop the violence, a brief opportunity to create an opening for political engagement between the government and those seeking change." He added that if this...

Aid workers say they are scaling up their operation to cope with the influx. But they are concerned about the dangers these refugees still face, as they remain close to the conflict zone. South Sudan's row with Sudan has put a strain on its economy, driving up inflation and sending officials scrambling for ways to make up for lost revenues. Landlocked South Sudan halted its own oil output -- about 350000 barrels a day -- in January after failing to agree how much it should pay to export crude via pipelines and other infrastructure in Sudan. Inflation has risen sharply since, while currencies of both countries have depreciated on the black market. According to officials, inflation in the south rose to 50.9 percent in March, from 42.4 percent in February. The price of a 5-kilogram bucket of beans has nearly doubled to 29 US dollars over the past six months, while sugar has tripled. In the capital city of Juba, motorists queued for hours to buy gas as gas stations ran dry due to a shortage of dollars after the oil shutdown. The underdeveloped nation, which has no refineries and practically no industry outside the oil sector, needs to import almost everything, from basic...
