MaximsNewsNetwork: (www.MaximsNews.com ) 18-19 May 2012 United Nations Supervision Mission in Syria: UNSMIS: Damascus, Syria - Upon arrival in Syria for a four day visit on Saturday (19 May), the head of UN peacekeeping, Hervé Ladsous, told journalists that the UN Military Observer mission has deployed at a speed "unprecedented in the history of the United Nations." Ladsous' is in Syria to assess progress made on the ground by UN military observers and to meet with Government officials and representatives of the opposition. On Friday (18 May) Chief Military Observer General Robert Mood briefed journalists and noted that the 260 military observers from 60 nations do not constitute a "powerful tool in military terms" but it is significant as it represents the "international community coming together on the ground." Refugees from Sudan and South Sudan are leading an uneasy life in the Kakuma refugee camp in northern Kenya. After decades of war between Sudanese troops and the Sudan Peoples Liberation Army, the SPLA has left at least two million people dead, and driven millions of others from their homes. South Sudan's separation from Sudan last July brought with it hope for a new beginning, but it hasn't been so easy. Daniel Maduol, UNHCR interpreter, fled his home in 1992 and has since been a refugee at the Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya. He wanted to find out just why he and many other nationals of Sudan and South Sudan would rather continue living as refugees in Kenya than return home. At the UNHCR reception center in Kakuma, Daniel Maduol was taking a family through their refugee status determination in the South Sudanese Dinka Language.
