Merriam's Dictionary defines Improvisation as "the act or art of improvising". Doing something un-rehearsed, un-planned, and achieving effective results (my definition). This is what St Louis' "The Improv Trick" is all about! Completely un-rehearsed comedy year round! This is a fantastic interview with Bill Chott, owner of The Improv Trick, and live action video footage from The Improv Trick as he teaches a "free" class while visiting his home town, St Louis. Lots of fun to watch, but even more fun to sign up and attend a class!

I recorded this in February, but forgot about it and only just rediscovered it on my hard-drive yesterday, so I uploaded it for my viewing pleasure.

In this clip, I take it out on a bit of a different tangent and link the topic of Language and Mind Mastery in with my other passion - Music and JAZZ! I will show you how to me, language and music are one in the same - that is, creating meanings with sounds. When learning languages, it's similar to developing a repertoire of 'riffs' when learning a language. The riffs get built into your muscle memory and then once they are part of you, you have freedom to then augment them, change them and alter them to your liking at a subconscious level, leaving your mind to just concentrate on painting meanings and your body following suit. The song I play in the beginning is a song I wrote for my daughter 'Star' (Her real name 'Janista', but as with all Thais, we use the one syllable nickname as her normal name). I wrote it while she was still in the womb - the song paints an image of what I imagined it was like in there, ready to come out into the the big wide world. The 'blues' song I play...

This is the middle movement of Three Nocturnes, performed by Willful Devices (Scott Miller, electronics, Pat O'Keefe, clarinet/bass clarinet) in 2010 at UW-River Falls. This structured improvisation is very loosely based on the Turkish Semai.

These are excerpts from a 20' improv for clarinet and real-time electronics by Willful Devices (Scott Miller and Pat O'Keefe) at the 2009 Spark Festival of Electronic Music and Arts. This improvisation provided the foundation for what would later become the structured improv work, "haiku, interrupted."

Another excerpt from the performance of Gummo the Musical in RAFA Club, Aberystwyth on Friday 20th April 2012. This piece is the second (improvised) performance of a song based on quotes from the character Tummler from Gummo. The lyrics are taken directly from the film (and recited incorrectly).
