Friday, February 24, 2012 CNN PRODUCER NOTE jyngbr70 shot this video on February 24 of ice floe moving down a bend of the Tongue River, near the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation in southeastern Montana. The floe 'was caused by a sudden thaw with ice jamming the river at various point along the river,' he said. The Tongue River is a tributary of the Yellowstone River, approximately 265 mi (426 km) long, in the US states of Wyoming and Montana. The Tongue rises in Wyoming in the Big Horn Mountains, flows through northern Wyoming and southeastern Montana and empties into the Yellowstone River at Miles City, Montana. Most of the course of the river is through the beautiful and varied landscapes of eastern Montana, including the Tongue River Canyon, the Tongue River breaks, the pine hills of southern Montana, and the buttes and grasslands that were formerly the home of vast migratory herds of American Bison. An NS loaded coal train rolls east with an ES40DC and a Tophat for power. His train is mostly Top Gons, with some newer coalporters, including the new "Stratagons" that were built in the last few months. Also some old Conrail coalporters from the mid to late 90s are in the mix. Good stuff for sure. He was going very slowly through here due to closing in on Lambert's Point. I definitely prefer track speed railfanning, but this is cool once in a while too. We had gone to the zoo and after we left, I had my window down. I was lucky, because otherwise I wouldn't have heard the horn on this train approaching! I'm glad that I was able to get this. Commentary by Joey Gattuso and Jessy Jane. The Doppler Effect: It is the apparent change in the sound frequency of a moving or stationary object compared to a moving or stationary observer. As seen in the video, the car's horn has a different pitch as it drives by the camera guy (observer). The comparison between the speed of sound and the speed of the car is what gives the horn a different frequency. As the car gets closer to the observer, the sound waves have less distance to travel for it to reach the observer's ears which gives it a different pitch then if the car was at a further distance. The Doppler radar, which is based off the Doppler effect, is commonly used in meteorology.
