Sahel: 160000 Malian refugees hanging in the balance

International aid is insufficient. "MSF calls on the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the World Food Program (WFP) to increase and speed up the distribution of aid in Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Niger before the rainy season makes aid distribution even more difficult," says Malik Allaouna, MSF director of operations. Since late January, nearly 160000 Malians have fled their country for camps in Burkina Faso, Mauritania and Niger. While instability persists in Mali, leaving little hope that the refugees can return to their country soon, another imminent threat is looming - the rainy season, which will further complicate the deployment of aid.

Angelina Jolie: Skin Deep - Trailer

Angelina Jolie has already lived a life that few could rival. She is the third actress in history to earn 20 million US dollars for a single film. But winning accolades or positive publicity does not fuel her true mission in life. She is driven by a genuine commitment to help those less fortunate. This quest runs skin deep in this remarkably loving individual. Angelina became personally aware of worldwide humanitarian crises whilst filming Tomb Raider, in poverty stricken Cambodia. Deeply affected by what she saw, Jolie then turned to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for more information. Angelina became a Goodwill Ambassador for the UNHCR in 2002, and has continued her good work in more than 20 countries around the world, highlighting the plight of millions of uprooted people and advocating for their protection. At this time she also adopted her first child, a seven-month-old Cambodian orphan. In 2005, she made her third visit to Pakistan, to help victims of the...

K'naan performed on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno an became a friend and associate of Canadian promoter Sol Guy, who helped him secure a speaking engagement before the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in 1999, where K'naan performed a spoken word piece criticizing the UN for its failed aid missions to Somalia.[14] One of the audience members, Senegalese singer Youssou N'Dour, was so impressed by the young MC's performance and courage that he invited him to contribute to his 2001 album Building Bridges, a project through which K'naan was able to tour the world. This project led to his work at other UN events, as well as the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Halifax Pop Explosion. It also helped him meet Canadian producer Brian West and Jarvis Church and his Track & Field team in 2002, who produced his debut album The Dusty Foot Philosopher, which was released in 2005 to critical acclaim. In 2006, it won the Juno Award for Rap Recording of the Year, and was nominated for...

The United Nations is warning that the fight against militants in Pakistan's tribal regions is leading to a sharp increase in displaced people. The UN's agency for refugees reports that the number of civilians registering for shelter at one camp, Jalozai, has reached over 200000. Jalozai is located in Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province. It was set up in the 1980s to shelter Afghan refugees fleeing the Soviet war. That conflict may have ended, but Jalozai continues to serve as a shelter for those escaping violence. These days, residents aren't refugees but internally displaced persons (IDPs). They are Pakistani civilians fleeing battle in their own country. The United Nations refugee agency said that there has been a sharp increase in people fleeing the fighting between the government and militants in the country's tribal regions. "This influx started on January 20.," said Yoshima Saita, who works with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). "At...

The world's largest concentration of internally displaced persons (IDP) Is in the Somali capital of Mogadishu. Somalis seek safety in inundated camps on a daily basis, as women, children, and the elderly are increasingly affected by the domestic unrest in the country. People have been forced to flee to the volatile capital due to ongoing clashes between the African Union Mission soldiers and the al-Shabaab militant group. Halima Aden is one of many vulnerable elderly Somalis seeking refuge at the camps. She says she needs food, but is too weak to work for it. 70-year old Habiba Mohammed has been displaced from the Bay region in central Somalia and said she journeyed 20 days to seek refuge and safety at a camp.
