This is a home recording of "Bavan Akhri" by Bibi Gurdev Kaur OBE. Bavan Akhari, is the name given to two compositions of Gurbani found in the Guru Granth Sahib on pages 250 to 262 by the fifth Sikh Guru, Guru Arjan Dev and on pages 340 to 343 by Sikh Bhagat, Bhagat Kabir ji. It is a poem constructed upon 52 (bavan) letters (akhar) of the alphabet. In this form of poetry each verse begins serially with a letter of the alphabet. The origin of the genre is traced to ancient Sanskrit literature. Since the Devanagari alphabet, employed in Sanskrit, comprises fifty two (bavan means 52, in Hindi) letters (33 consonants, 16 vowels and 3 compounds), such compositions came to be called bavan akhari or bavan aksari. The Bavan Akhari, by Guru Arjan, comprises fifty five pauris or stanzas of eight lines each, preceded by slokas all of which are couplets except the one preceding the last stanza which is of four lines. Please for Waheguruji's sake dont associate lohri with sikhs n sikhi. The concept of Lohri goes contrary to the teaching of SGGS Ji.You guys already know the story of Prehlad (a Bhagat mentioned in Gurbani). His aunt tried to burn him but he couldn't get burnt because he was the true devotee of God. From there people started celebrating Lohri and that's why people burn woods at night and they pray to fire that Don't harm our sons either like you didn't harm Prehlad. This festival is only for men. When a boy is born people distribute food, clothes etc.. but when a girl is born they do nothing. And think that the fire couldn't burn Prehlad and he was a boy so in order to pray to fire it has to be a boy. Besides a woman is considered inferior. This is all Bipran Ki Reet. Also by litting and sitting around the fire we are conducting "Agan (fire) Pooja". The Sihks' head must only bow before SGGS Ji. Khalsa is sustained by the Will of the Almighty Khalsa Kaal Purakh Ki Fauj is the Line of Saint-Soldiery, common among sikhs. These are words of Guru Gobind Singh. The purpose of the Khalsa as defined by the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh who established the order of Sant Sipahi (Saintly warriors) was to act as "the army of God" to guard and protect everyone (not just Sikhs) and who always act according to their Gurus' teachings, rules and ethics were at act with charity, love and service to all human beings. The commandments of the Khalsa being enshrined in the Sri Guru Granth Sahib. This brings unprecedented responsibilities and duties that need to be fulfilled by the Khalsa.
