At a summit in Brussels, the EU heads of state and government discussed how to revive Europe's struggling economy. The EU crisis has taken a turn for the worse due to growing fears that Greece may quit the euro currency because of its opposition to austerity. Specifically, the leaders agreed to increase the capital of the EU's long-term lending institution, the European Investment Bank, by 10 billion Euros. But these initiatives are seen as minor. Analysts note that the EU needs more fundamental changes - like liberalizing the bloc's common market. Greece was also discussed at the summit. The leaders urged the country to stick to unpopular budget cuts as a precondition for its current international bailout. Another difficult subject on the agenda was the creation of so-called euro bonds - a mechanism which would allow stronger EU countries to guarantee the debt of weaker ones. Most nations are in favor. But the more stable EU members, such as Germany, do not like the idea of...

GLOBAL ECONOMIC CONTAGION: Euro Zone - Greece Crisis Threatens to "Open Door to Hell"?!

Greece's former finance minister has told Sky News that if Greece reneges on its bailout deal with the EU and the IMF it will "open the door to hell". Sky News last interviewed George Papaconstantinou two-and-a-half years ago. In December 2009 he told how Greece could survive independently and Greece's creditors had nothing to fear - they would get back every euro they were owed. A lot has changed since then. Greece is in the process of borrowing 240bn euros of emergency loans from the EU and the IMF (in return for pledges to raise taxes, cut spending and balance the books) and investors holding Greek debt have been forced write off up to 50% of their money. Even now Greece remains heavily in debt, deep in recession (now in its fifth year) and without a functioning elected government. Mr Papaconstantinou lost his position as finance minister last summer, shortly after the second bailout package was agreed. In the general election, two weeks ago, he also lost his seat as an MP. He...

The leader of Greece's left-wing Syriza bloc has said he will try to form a coalition based on tearing up the terms of the EU/IMF bailout deal. Alexis Tsipras, whose bloc came second in Sunday's vote, said Greek voters had "clearly nullified the loan agreement". He has to reach a coalition deal and has told the two major parties to end their support for the austerity terms if they want to take part. The European Commission and Germany say countries must stick to budget cuts.

(but aren't they supposed to be saving the economy?) The faces say it all. With agony and ecstasy in equal measure, the world's most powerful leaders are put through the full gamut of emotions as they watch Chelsea's thrilling win over German rivals Bayern Munich in the Champions League final. During a nail-biting penalty shoot-out, David Cameron throws his arms aloft in celebration as Didier Drogba slots home the winning goal. Meanwhile, German chancellor Angela Merkel can only look on glumly as they caught the action during the G8 summit in the United States. The cheers and the tears: Prime Minister David Cameron (fourth left) celebrates while watching Chelsea beat Bayern Munich in the Champions League final alongside a rather glum German Chancellor Angela Merkel (centre) It was sweet revenge for two years ago when Mr Cameron had to endure a humiliating 4-1 thrashing at the hands of Germany that put England out of the World Cup, all while sat next to his German counterpart. Cellphone video shows rescue teams tending to injured students after a bomb went off One girl killed and seven pupils injured in attack on Francesca Morvillo Falcone vocational school in Brindisi. Suspect indentified: www.guardian.co.uk A bomb has exploded in front of a school in the southern Italian town of Brindisi, killing one girl and injuring seven other pupils. The device went off as students were arriving at the Francesca Morvillo Falcone vocational school at around 8am (6am GMT). The school is named after the anti-mafia prosecutor Giovanni Falcone and his wife, who were killed by a mafia bomb in Sicily 20 years ago this weekend. But authorities said it was unclear if there was an organised crime link to the school blast. As yet, no one has claimed responsibility for the explosion. Three days ago, government officials announced security was being stepped up throughout the country after a shooting that wounded a nuclear energy official, several threats against tax officials...

www.rt.com Frankfurt police have detained 400 anti-capitalist protesters ahead of a key conference on monetary policy scheduled for the weekend. With thousands more heading into the city in the coming hours, new clashes are expected. Authorities say anti-capitalists were erecting barricades, vandalizing road signs and blocking traffic at various locations across the city. Frankfurt -- Germany's financial capital -- is home to the European Central Bank (ECB). As the eurozone faces a deepening of the economic crisis following fears that Greece can no longer remain part of the currency bloc, policymakers from EU member states have arrived in the city for two days of intense talks. Meanwhile, up to 30000 protesters are expected to make their way into the Frankfurt over the weekend. Their chief demand is an end to austerity -- cuts in government spending, often made by sovereign governments in exchange for offers of loans from the EU -- which activists say is leading to "Europe-wide...

Former finance minister, Yiannos Papantoniou, saw trouble ahead: "Greece would not be able to support 11 million people so there will be huge emigration flows," he said. "Disruptions, social disruptions will come. I would say a regime of total anarchy." Last year 23800 Greeks emigrated to Germany alone, 90 percent more than the previous year, German data show and Greeks are queuing up to learn German. Most economists agree the austerity measures Greece is labouring under offer it little hope of recovery near term, and some argue that if it leaves the euro, it could export its way back to health on the back of a vastly devalued fiat paper currency. But, barring tourism, it does not have businesses or industries that could drive such a recovery. Even if freed of its debt-cutting targets, the fact the country runs a primary deficit - spending more than it takes in taxes - means it would have to continue austerity measures and, because it would be shut out of international markets, it...

Obama Discusses Budget Cut with French President
Tags: business finance investing stock news trading analysis market
President Obama had his first meeting with the new French president Francois Holland today in the White House. They agreed that global leaders should focus on ways to promote growth as well as budget cuts in Europe. Of course it would be very difficult to achieve both, but let's face it, Europe is going through its worst week year-to-date. Our networks reported on the troubled banks earlier and things didn't get better from there. In Greece, people are withdrawing Euro from the Greek banks and depositing them into banks of other countries, such as Germany. In the event that Greece reverts to its own currency, that currency will most likely depreciate sharply against the Euro and people want to protect their hard earned money. In a smaller but significant European country, Cyprus, the government announced it would underwrite a €1.8 billion capital raising by Popular Bank of Cyprus. To put this €1.8 billion in perspective, the GDP of Cyprus is only €25 billion, so the banking...
