This is a test of my recently acquired Aero Ektar 306mm f/2.5 lens. These were used during WWII and into the so called "Cold War" for high altitude recon photos. These lenses have 7 elements with the two doublets containing thorium glass; a strong gamma emitter. Gamma photons are characterized as high energy light with very short wavelengths. If one could "see" gamma ray photons this lens would glow. This lens registers 1.5 mR/Hr with a CDV-700 Civil Defense Geiger counter. The amount of acceptable radioactive exposure is 500 mR/HR above natural background per year, so one would have to have this lens close by for 333 hours. Any additional radiation from dental x-rays, CT scans, and other medial procedures would add more to that amount.
