MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The American Indian Cancer Foundation's (AICAF) "Pow-wow for Hope" allows traditions to be preserved and continue on. This pow-wow took place on Saturday, April 28 in order to raise money and bring awareness to the cause. A silent auction started at 10 am in order to raise money for the cancer foundation. The pow-wow took place at the YWCA of Midtown. "There are a lot of survivors here," says the Community Health Worker for the AICAF, Joy Rivera, a member of the Haudenosaunee tribe. "Cancer has recently become the number one cause of death for American Indians in many regions of the United States, with the highest rates in the Northern Plains and Alaska," According to the AICAF. The AICAF says cancer is the leading cause of death for American Indians in Minnesota.
