From 1910 to 1945 Korea was a colony of fascist Japan; after ww2, Soviet forces took over the north and US forces took over the south, each installing autocratic governments friendly to their interests. Student protests forced Sygnman Rhee, the autocratic president to resign in 1960 but a military coup a year later crushed hopes of democracy. For several decades South Korea was ruled by the military juntas of Park Chung Hee and Chun Doo Hwan. Park Chung Hee's rule coincided with a period of rapid economic growth, beginning South Korea's transformation from a third-world country to a major economic power, but these accomplishments were overshadowed by a legacy of repression. When Park was assassinated in 1979 he was replaced by Chun Doo Hwan; his first act as head of state was to massacre thousands of peaceful demonstrators in Kwangju.
