Information about the Community Cords project (facebook.com/communitycords). Two of the biggest reasons why people are trapped in the cycle of poverty are lack of education and inability to earn a decent living. The Community Cords project is attempting to tackle these two head-on in the Cuatro neighbourhood of Metro Manila, Philippines. In partnership with Kids International Ministires (kidsim.org), Community Cords provides employment and a decent wage to poor women. These women, many of whom are single mothers, make bracelets which they sell to Community Cords for distribution overseas. The income these women generate from making and selling these bracelets are making a huge difference in their lives and the lives of their children. Context: William Bradley is a food service worker employed by food service provider Sodexo at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. William has worked at Emory University since September of 2000. William and his co-workers have always received unemployment benefits when they are laid off for the summer and other school breaks. Recently, the Georgia Labor Commissioner Mark Butler decided to bar contracted educational workers including food service workers and bus drivers from unemployment benefits.
