I had to go train chasing July 18th 2009 to see the Milwaukee Road Daylight 4449 Steam Locomotive while it was close to home and caught up with it in Savana Illinois. It was a beautiful locomotive and passenger train made up of cars from several lines including GNW&B, Milwaukee Road, Arizona, St. Paul, Lake Pepin, New York Central, Southern Pacific Lines, and Missouri-Kansas-Texas. It was converted over to an Oil Fired boiler so it didn't smoke very much until they leaned into the throttle to leave. They also gave it just a little too much throttle at the start and had a little wheel spin, but that just added to the show. Just an awesome sight, that was well worth the trip to see. People don't realize just how powerful these old steam locomotives were, moving that much tonage using just 2 cylinders connected directly to the drive wheels. Even with the wheel spin from steel on steel, it still didn't take long to get the train moving and up to speed.
