Dorey is a graduate of Trent University in Peterborough, Ontario where she studied English, History and mythology. Her interests were expanded into religious studies after studying the New Testament at the University of Windsor in 1991. The Alps range can be seen here, where it ends, and the Taurus Mountains are there, too, and are really beautiful. This facility seemed to be in the middle of nowhere, and as we had been snowed in the day before near Pamukkale, everything was white and beautiful, but I do not know exactly where we were. Silworms eat mulberry leaves. When they go into the cocoon stage, these are collected and the worms are suffocated. If they live, they break free from the cocoon, breaking the threads. The cocoons are put into hot water. They are unwound, combed, skeined, by hand and using a wooden hand-cranked device which I will show you on another clip. The double-knot system is said to be the best. They aren't actually woven, with a warp, woof and shuttle; rather, double knots are made. The same pattern can be seen on both sides. These women are a demonstration team, and photos were permitted. One lady from our group was invited to sit down and try it. The women work at home. No more than 3 hours total per day are allowed, and after one hour, they are ordered by law to stop, as the work is hard on the eyes, hands and back. They can work the periods of time which suit them. Rushing to finish a rug is not encouraged. Errors in the knots or designs are accepted, as they are proof that it is not a machine-made rug, and also, the mood of the lady counts. If she is sad, it is said you can see her tears in it. In 2009, Franklin was commissioned by the Voss Foundation, whose primary goal is to provide clean drinking water to African communities, to photograph its work in the Dogon region of Mali, focusing on women and water. The purpose of the mission was both to document the Voss Foundation's successful water projects in the area, and to increase awareness of the global water crisis. Franklin's trip to Mali resulted in a series of photographs depicting the life of a desert landscape, where water is paramount in the daily struggle to survive. In an effort to promote awareness, the photographs invite the viewer to consider water as a precious resource rather than an endless commodity. The Arthur Ross gallery video-recorded Franklin's lecture on November 4, in conjunction with the exhibition.

This is a video of the fonio harvest near Sokolo, a small village near Bandiagara on the Dogon Plateau of Mali, West Africa. The men are singing a song of thanks to God for the rain that made the fonio grow, the men to harvest the fonio, the women to cook the fonio, and the children that will eat the fonio and grow big and strong. The drummers and the woman in the video are encouraging the men to harvest faster in the typical Dogon fashion.
