Hundreds of medical professionals gathered in Istanbul Wednesday to stage a rally demanding better work conditions and putting an end to injustice. Local media reports said that many doctors and nurses joined the sit-in protest in front of the city center's Şişli Etfal Hospital. Under Turkish law, public sector workers do not have the right to strike, however, the Turkish Health Union (Türk Sağlık-Sen) went ahead with the walkout despite warnings from the authorities. Demands to end violence against medical workers and to improve wages and work conditions were not met during the collective bargaining process, according to an official with the union. As of May, 36 attacks were reported in Istanbul alone, triggering widespread concerns. A 17-year-old boy stabbed the doctor who failed to save his grandfather and an opposition Member of Parliament assaulted an emergency room medic treating his family.
