Margaret Torczon gives a speech before accepting a plaque in honor of late husband Gene Torczon's induction into the Nebraska Baseball Hall of Fame on Feb. 12, 2012, at Aunt Mary's Restaurant and Events Center in Beatrice, Neb. About 400 people attended the event, including the University of Nebraska baseball coaching staff. The head coach, Darin Erstad, who can be seen to Mom's right, was the featured speaker. As mentioned by NEBHOF committee member Ron Douglas, who told of Dad's accomplishments before introducing Mom, Erstad is among a few ex-Husker players who share Dad's school record for most hits in one game (6). Mom was the only female to speak at the event, but based on the laughter that her comments drew, she may given the speech of the night! One of the nicest baseball players I've met, Darin was very accomodating with me for this story. Darin played for the Angels from 1996-2006, the White Sox in 2007, and the Astros in '08 & '09. This is an interesting conversation with Darin in Lake Elsinore, CA, home of the Lake Elsinore Storm, the Padres class high-A team in the California league, where he was rehabbing an injury while playing with his visiting Angels affiliate, Inland Empire. He talks about the level of competition in the Class-A league, what it takes to succeed, having fun, and about winning as a team, something he did while winning a national championship as a football player with the Nebraska Cornhuskers, and with the Angels in 2002! The career .282 hitter is now the Head Coach for the Nebraska Cornhusker Baseball team!
