Dr Simon Thurley, Chief Executive of English Heritage delivers a public lecture at Madingley Hall on 14 July 2011. While the years of New Labour have been sometimes characterised as a golden age for culture, the first decade of the 21st century was a difficult time for heritage. Political policy and practice was at best indifferent and at worst hostile to the idea of English history and heritage. In this controversial lecture, Simon Thurley, who was at the helm of English Heritage through the period, looks back at what went wrong and assesses the future of the nation's heritage. The lecture is chaired by Dr Frank Salmon, Head of the Department of History of Art at the University of Cambridge, and introduced by Dr Rebecca Lingwood, Director of Continuing Education. Please note that the lecture proper begins at the 3:40 minute point in the video.

Tags: health  epidemiology

Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, delivers a public lecture at Madingley Hall on 24 November 2011. Today's world is faced with a multiplicity of challenges including energy, food, water and economic well-being. Each of these will ultimately culminate in an impact on the agenda for the development of health services. Medicine is currently, in practice, unaffordable for much of the world's population, but how best to deal with core issues concerning child health, maternal health, and dependency and care for those with chronic diseases, are issues which must be addressed in any civilised society. The lecture is chaired by Dr Ron Zimmern, Chairman of the Foundation for Genomics and Population Health, and introduced by Dr Rebecca Lingwood, Director of Continuing Education at the University of Cambridge. Please note that the lecture proper begins at the 4:05 minute point in the video.

Tags: HFEA  medicine  reproduction  stem cell

Baroness Deech, Chair of the Bar Standards Board, delivers a public lecture at Madingley Hall on 3 October 2011. Politics have played a more significant part in the regulation of reproductive medicine than is commonly recognised. Starting with the media and parliamentary reaction to the birth of Louise Brown in 1978, to the contemporary parliamentarians' struggle to keep the Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority (HFEA) as an integrated body, legislators, clinicians, religious authorities and journalists have competed to seize direction of the way in which this law and regulation develops. Stem cell work in the UK was legalised in 2001, in part because of the confidence in regulation generated by the existence of the HFEA and in part because of the thoroughness and secular nature of the debate. Britain remains a leading nation in stem cell and reproductive medicine, but this position is now threatened by Government attempts to cut expenditure on quangos. In this...

Tags: risk  communication

Professor David Spiegelhalter, Winton Professor of the Public Understanding of Risk at the University of Cambridge delivers a public lecture at Madingley Hall on 3 May 2011. Perception of risk can be influenced by the choice of words, numbers and pictures. Preferences and understanding varies among people, which suggests the use of multiple presentations including comparators and interactive animations. Communicating 'deeper' uncertainties, in the face of explicit and implicit ignorance, is more tricky. And it's important to bear in mind that people's reactions to risk narratives are likely to be dominated by their cultural world-view. This lecture looked at examples of communication of sensitive topics, from statins to swine flu, climate change to volcanic ash. The lecture is chaired by Professor John Rallison, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Education at Cambridge, and introduced by Dr Rebecca Lingwood, Director of Continuing Education. Please note that the lecture proper begins at the...
