Jessica Ernst shared her story. She has worked as an environmental consultant for the oil and gas industry over the past 30 years in Alberta and other western provinces. Ernst says in 2001, a company began secret experimental shale fracturing development in her community, Rose Bud, Alberta, even though it didn't have proper consultation and assessments. According to Ernst the driller denied the activity. She says drillers perforated shale that was more than 105 meters below the surface. And, in 2004, drillers hit the aquifer for the community. As a result peoples water supply was contaminated. Ernst says that's when some residents were blamed for not taking care of their wells. A controversial gas extraction process has been identified as the probable cause of two small earthquakes in Britain. Fracking, as it's commonly known, is used in many parts of the world including New Zealand. Its technical name is 'hydraulic fracturing' -- the process of pumping water, sand and chemicals underground at high pressure, forcing tiny gaps in the rock to expand. This releases gas, which travels up to the surface to be captured. In the United States fracking is controversial, with claims that it leads to groundwater contamination. On one occasion a drilling mistake saw water contaminated with methane gas. When the ground began to rumble in Lancashire in the UK where fracking was being carried out, the drilling company asked for a report.
