www.ntv.co.ke Police Commissioner Mathew Iteere has accused parents of neglecting youths in the society, leading to increased crime and joblessness being witnessed in the country. The commissioner says teachers and parents have a role to play in encouraging pupils and students against engaging in idleness that fuels drug abuse and crime. He was addressing teachers and students from Imenti Central District during the region's prize-giving day for excelling schools in last year's KCPE and KCSE exams. He challenged the school administrators to work towards changing the fortunes of their schools especially after the district emerged second last in the Meru County. Iteere was the chief guest at the event. Meanwhile, teachers have threatened to go on strike beginning July this year should allowances awarded by the Government in 2007 not be factored into this year's budget

The UN Human rights chief Navi Pillay has urged Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe to ensure fair and violence-free elections when the country finally votes for new leaders sometime next year.
