Hindraf to field Uthayakumar for GE13 (Malaysiakini) The Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) today named its de factoleader P Uthayakumar as its candidate for the next general election. When contacted, Uthayakumar said he will contest in two seats, namely the parliamentary seat of Kota Raja and the state seat of Sri Andalas in Selangor, which are currently both held by Pakatan Rakyat. "If I win, I will be the first Hindraf candidate in Parliament and the Selangor state assembly, we are going on a platform of equal opportunity, upward mobility and the elimination of racism by the state and private sector," he said. Uthayakumar was the key leader of Hindraf rally in 2007 and was subsequently detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) for 514 days. NEW YORK (NNS) -- The commencement of Fleet Week New York 2012 was marked by fireworks exploding over US and coalition ships moored on the Hudson River on May 23. Approximately 6000 Sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen descended upon the city to celebrate the 25th Fleet Week New York, taking place May 23-30. Fleet Week New York 2012 marks the 25th year the city has celebrated the nation's sea services. This year, the seven-day event coincides with the commemoration of the Bicentennial of the War of 1812 and will host more than 6000 service members from the Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard team in addition to coalition ships from around the world. The controversial appointments of 47 county commissioners yet again took a different twist after Deputy Speaker Farah Maalim declined to rule whether or not President Kibaki flouted the constitution when making the appointments. While making a ruling over the appointments which have split the coalition government, Maalim said the house is not legitimately seized of the matter since the appointments were not made or vetted by parliament. And as Chris Thairu reports, the deputy speaker also told the mps that they were at liberty to seek other avenues to compel the executive to withdraw the appointments.

Another night of street protests in Beirut. They were sparked when 13 Lebanese pilgrims were kidnapped in Syria, apparently by groups linked to the Syrian rebels.
