Apparently good news such as these started to spread like wild fire and people rushed over and formed long lines to take advantage of the situation. Some people used many different bank cards and withdrew thousands of pounds in cash, and over 200 people took part before police arrived on the scene. The police stated that withdrawing money from a malfunctioning ATM machine might lead to the bank pursuing legal action against the customer for fraud, however HSBC, the operator of the faulty ATM machine stated that customers dont have to return the cash they withdrew as this was a mistake that the bank made. Chinese netizens are comparing this incident to that of Xu Ting, a young Chinese man who was initially sentenced to life imprisonment for exploiting an ATM malfunction that...

Exactly who was behind the affair, what happened, and how it was resolved remains unclear -- but what IS clear is the very different way this detention of Chinese fishermen was approached by the Chinese government. When Chinese crews have been held by South Korean, Japanese or Philippine coastguards, the gov't response has usually been loud and sustained. But in this case involving a vessel purportedly from North Korea the news was kept hidden for several days and then referred to only briefly.
