Herbert "Herb" Arthur Wiedoeft (Nov.22,1886 - May 12,1928) was a band leader in California in the 1920s. Wiedoeft was born in Germany and came to the USA with his parents as a child. He came from a family of gifted musicians and was encouraged by his father. His brothers Gerhardt and Adolph (nicknamed "Gay" and "Ad") played as sidemen in his band, Gerhardt on string bass and Adolph on percussion and xylophone. Another brother, Rudy Wiedoeft was a famous saxophone player during the late ragtime and early jazz era. Their sister, Erica, was a pianist. Wiedoeft started his first orchestra before 1915. Herb's band played for most of its time at the Cinderella Roof Ballroom in the Los Angeles Biltmore Hotel. The band's theme song "Cinderella Blues" came from this venue. The band recorded four songs for the Nordskog label in 1922. The band gained a recording contract with Brunswick Records, toured in Chicago and New York and earned a national reputation. I was lucky enough to be around with my video camera when Sprocka (www.sprocka.com), a well known and amazingly talented musician on the Caribbean island of Anguilla, treated the crowd to an impromptu concert at The Sunshine Shack on Rendezvous Bay, Anguilla. (May 2012) Just a few minutes before this video was taken, Elvis (aka 'Ela", in the Knicks jersey) of Elvis' Beach Bar in Sandy Ground, Anguilla, had just tried his hand at sailing a one-person Sunfish sailboat around in the water. I'm not sure exactly what happened, but he ended up sailing it right into Sprocka's boat, luckily without causing any damage (as far as I know!). Sprocka took that as an opportunity to invent a new song right then and there, called "Ela F*ck Up Mi Boat". He entertained us with this hilarious song, and with Floyd (drummer for Omari Banks' band "Eleven") providing masterful percussions on a nearby bar stool, continued on into a song called "Big Bamboo". The Avett Brothers perform "I and Love and You" at their sold out Terminal Five show in New York City on May 10, 2012. This was an incredible experience and I was really excited to film this from the handicap section of T5 (which we were in because of my pregnant friend Lizzie Merin). After the song finished the band was walking off the stage and Scott Avett stopped in front of us to talk to and thank Lizzie for coming (I got so flustered that I had to stop filming). LOVE these guys and ANY chance you have to check them out...GO! As a fellow North Carolinian it's awesome to see such talent come from the state.
