BONG PEÑERA QUARTET: WAVE-Live Performance

April, 1994. The scene was Rogeo's in Chicago, one of the then leading local jazz bars and pubs. It was one those packed shows that the Manila jazz legend held. But this 2 night gig was special. Bong was flanked by the cream of the crop: talented Filipino guitar phenom, Chris "Dong" Zamora on guitars, Ross Lahlum on acoustic bass, and Brazilian genius Dedé Sampaio on drums and percussion. This track is by Antonio Carlos Jobim, entitled "WAVE" and it is culled from a Live CD of Bong entitled "Live at Rogeo's". That this clip should be released now is nothing more than fortuitous. The Filipino music scene has just had a big loss: that of Dong Zamora who had passed away on December 10, 2011, just three months after Manila lost its own, Edgar "Koyang" Avenir, who also played with Bong. There are 13 other tracks including: "Lady Madonna", "Bluesette", "My One and Only Love", "A Samba Song", "O Cantador", "Satin Doll", "Take Five", and many more. More details about the availability of...

BONG PEÑERA: SAMBA DE UMA NOTA SO (One Note Samba) with MARIA DULCE SOARES DA SILVA
Tags: Bong Peñera Jose Penera Maria Dulce Soares da Silva Dudú da Silva Ding Poblete Sonny Nabong Bing Villegas
Here it is, many will say 'finally,' a long awaited release of a track from the original sessions of Manila jazz legend Bong Peñera with Maria Dulce Soares da Silva. Recorded in 1976, the year Bong's A SAMBA SONG debuted with Maria's singing of the title song in her native Portuguese, Dudú (Maria's nickname), here, sings and feels most at home as she sings fellow countryman, Jobim's classic, Samba de Uma Nota So or "One Note Samba. By the way, Dudú translated Bong's A SAMBA SONG into Portuguese and sang it herself in that same album. Featured here are the following musicians: Ding Poblete on drums, the original drummer for Bong's first LP, Sonny Nabong on bass and Bing Villegas on percussion. Bong plays the Wurlitzer electric piano and Dudú weaves her vocal magic. The recording was done in a very small studio in Makati, Rizal. It was a time when Bong and Bing were doing jingles besides their regular gig as the Batucada group. Sometime remained after recording a jingle and so...
Bong Peñera: So Danço Samba

BONG PEÑERA: SÓ DANÇO SAMBA It's finally here. We've all known the great Manila jazz legend, Bong Peñera, as a brilliant pianist, arranger and composer. In this almost 8-minute clip, an aspect of his craft shines: that of singing and scatting and "carefree-ly" playing with his co-performing musicians. The clip was quite lengthy with that long applause at the end. I opted not to fade out either because, as you will hear, every note, up to the last, is worth digesting. Unbeknownst to many, the late Bobby Enriquez, a great pianist himself, became good friends with Bong in the US. When Bobby visited Chicago, he sought out Bong, picked him up his apartment and brought him to sit first row in three of his shows in Chicago. The two hit it off and before Bobby flew back to New York, he seriously gave Bong some advice or suggestion, not known to all but which Bong details in his book, SONGS IN MY LIFE. He told Bong, "Bong, you're already up there with your playing. It's undeniable. But...

The Best of Pinoy Divas (TRIPLE TREAT) 1. Love Me Again - Vernie Varga 2. Bring Back Yesterday - Norma Ledesma 3. Memories - Eileen Espina "VERNIE VARGA" Verni Varga, or Ignacia Mabugat in real life, has carved a niche for herself in the local music industry as "The Queen of Corporate Shows". A native of Cebu's Bantayan Island, her family moved to Manila when she was one. Coming from a vocally gifted household (her father had a beautiful voice and her brother sang in a band), Varga would discover her own talent later in college. Hanging out with friends one day after class at the Papillion bar across the Manila Garden Hotel, she gamely obliged them with an impromptu number a cool and husky rendition of an Astrud Gilberto song. By the end of the gimmick, the young lass had become the female vocalist of Bong Peñeras renowned jazz ensemble, Batucada. Peñera takes credit for christening the already sexy singer Verni Varga, a combination of her real nickname, as she was born on a...
BONG PEÑERA and JACQUI MAGNO: Here's That Rainy Day

Here's a favorite of most jazz musicians and singers, a classic of Jimmy Van Heusen and Johnny Burke, Here's That Rainy Day. This is a very rare, televised clip of the great Bong Peñera on piano and arrangements, with the incomparable Manila Queen of Jazz, Jacqui Magno, on vocals. Plus, it was all impromptu, no practices, or run-throughs whatsoever. In this clip Bong and Jacqui are introduced by Jim Paredes and Nanette Inventor, aka Donya Budding. The APO Hiking Society (Jim, Danny and Boboy, were co-hosting the show with veteran Bobby Ledesma, and comedian Nanette Inventor was guest-host.) It's a very inestimable nostalgic piece of memorabilia that should be preserved under glass in La Louvre or a Florentine museum. But then again all of Bong Peñera's works, most of which are enjoying resurgence, should be preserved in such a manner. Consummate artists like Bong and Jacqui come only once in a lifetime. And so to have these kinds of clip or clips at our fingertips, courtesy of the...
BONG PEÑERA with PAT CASTILLO: LOVE NOTES From Live telecast of Two For the Road
Tags: Bong Peñera Jose Penera Pat Castillo Love Notes Two for the Road Nestor Torre Elvira Manahan Paul Candelaria Edgar Avenir Al Iglesias
As in the past Bong Peñera has always had "non-samba" songs from his albums of all-original compositions. In the maiden, "A Samba Song" two standout: the poetic "Afraid to be Known" and "Rosita Maria", both lyrical ballads that cut through the smoke. The rest of the tracks were these beautiful Jobim-like tunes, so beautiful that a Brazilian diplomat he met through another friend, Maria Dulce Soares da Silva ("Dudu" to friends) offered to translate the title song to Brazilian Portuguese. But Dudu, like most Brazilian women, loved to sing and sang quite well. Bong heard her singing the song in Portuguese and decided to include her track in the maiden album. In the second, "Batucada Sa Calesa" there's the "Lullaby", the "Valse Nova" (composed for his father), and "Imee" which he dedicated to his friend Imee Marcos. And in the 3rd, recorded in 1980, there is the now famous "Love Notes", a swing work featuring the commendable singing of Pat Castillo, for whom he wrote this song. Though...
BONG PEÑERA with NANETTE INVENTOR: Body and Soul
Tags: Bong Peñera Jose Penera Nanette Inventor Bobby Ledesma Body and Soul Discorama Donya Buding
Famed comedian and singer, Nanette Inventor, (aka Donya Buding) joins the celebrated Manila jazz artist, Bong Peñera, in an impromptu duet of the great jazz classic, Body and Soul. The clip/track is from a popular TV program, Discorama, back in 1980, hosted by Bobby Ledesma and the APO Hiking Society guys, Jim Paredes, Danny Javier and Boboy Garovillo. This clip, however, only shows Bobby Ledesma introducing the number with Bong and Nanette. The theme of the show was "RasmaJazz" and Bong was the main guest. Bong also did a duet with Jacqui Magno entitled "Here's That Rainy Day" (clip to come soon as well), and did a solo on the piano performing Johnny Mandel's Theme from MASH , Dave Brubeck's Take Five, and The Entertainer as a closing theme. He was interviewed on his current gig then in Angeles City. The revelation in this show was that Nanette was/is a jazz singer of note, having been mentored by the great Emil Mijares, Bong's friend. It was a bit of info not known then or to...

As promised here is another clip from the live TV telecast of the program "Two for the Road" hosted by Nestor Torre and Elvira Manahan. It was 1984. Fresh from his 3-year stint from Hong Kong's Royal Garden Hotel, Bong was treated to this unexpected musical reunion on TV, live. The telecast will never reveal the pathos Bong felt. On camera, there he is, poker-faced composed, soft-spoken and unassuming. But inward and after the show, he was in tears. As he is still, viewing this video I had made. Watching Jacqui sing this fast paced version, Bong's arrangement of Jobim's 'One Note Samba', Bong asks, "Can there be any doubt? Sure, I have heard of many other singers after Jacqui claim they're 'it'. To them I say, 'Hold your horses'. Watch and listen to this clip. Besides, look at how Jacqui is so natural at being a comedian and a singer. 'Forget it about it' still keeps me in stiches!" I believe it's fair to say, to declare, that the years of 1975-80 in Philippine Music, or the time...

Tags: Bong Peñera Jose Penera Pat Castillo Antonio Carlos Jobim Edgar Avenir Sonny Nabong Uly Avante Harry Tambuatco Samba de Uma Nota So One Note Samba Waters of March Girl From Ipanema Águas de Março
Here it is finally: the clip featuring Bong with Pat Castillo, for whom he wrote the now revered "Love Notes." (This clip to come soon). But for this track Bong had arranged a medley of three songs by Brazilian Antonio Carlos Jobim and did so with a tinge of funk and samba. Pat's" Natalie Cole-like" vocal styling shines. But as you can hear in this track, Pat does have her own unique artistry and it blends well with Bong's trademark samba and beat. The songs featured are "Samba de Uma Nota So" or "One Note Samba", "The Waters of March" and "Girl From Ipanema." Bong sings the Brazilian Portuguese lyrics while Pat magically weaves in the English lyrics, with her masterful and jazzy filigrees surrounding Bong's straight-tone singing. "When I composed my song 'Love Notes' I really envisioned Pat singing it and no one else. I wanted someone with a Billie Holiday mystique, something sweet and sassy simultaneously and Pat had all of these and more. She sings with a mysterious tease: there...
BONG PEÑERA : A SAMBA SONG from Two for the Road, Live TV Telecast, 1984

It's a long title above I know, but as a journalist, I feel the subject or headline should tell it all. If YouTube will allow this, then kudos to YouTube. But more importantly, to you and me, and to whoever will watch this clip, kudos to you and me. "How lucky can we get?" This is the first ever video clip of the great artist in action, telecast before millions of Filipino viewers then, in 1984, and then now, probably even billions, after the release of this clip. Bong had just returned from a three year stint in Hong Kong (1981-1984), and Manila celebrities like Nestor Torre and the late Elvira Manahan (she frequented Calesa Bar to watch Bong), fans themselves of the great artist, were in into telecasting a welcome reunion for Bong. And here, right before you, is the magic of that telecast: Bong -- playing and singing his original composition "A Samba Song" that debuted in his maiden LP of the same title in 1976. Believe it or not, this is from a crude Betamax tape. Bong handed me...

This song"Samba Chicago" won 2nd place in the Latin category of the 1989 TDK-Billboard Songwriting Contest held in the US This 5th album of original songs by Bong Peñera was produced by Bong and his friend Lorenzo Katigbak, Jr., (simply "Jun" to his friends). It has some very welcome surprises: foremost of this is the English vocals contributed by UP Concert Chorus singer, Diane Espejo-Velasco (soloist featured in the title track). The other surprise was the song "The Heart is A Lonely Hunter" that departs from the bossa nova, but had a very Bacharach/pop-like flavor. As in his third album, this particular song is from a poem, this one written by gifted Chicago poet/artist, Jorge Rodriguez-Florido. There is another song in the album Bong wrote, again, for a girl, or containing the name of a girl or a muse, this time "Andrea." (Who can forget Bong' earlier songs entitled "Amanda", "Imee" "Luisa", "Imelda" "Rosita Maria", etc? Even early on during his CEU Conservatory of Music days,...

BONG PEÑERA: AFTER THE STORM (Music by Bong Peñera ©2011) This is an instrumental number, a welcome one, and another original by Bong Peñera, written just recently, this month of May in the year 2011. It will be included in Bong's upcoming CD of original works. Originally titled "Soundtrack" Bong changed it to "After the Storm" as it was really written during the Easter Season, and in May, when spring converges with the joy of Easter. The storm consisted of the Passion of our Lord, but after three days, after Good Friday came the peace and joy of Easter Sunday. "We all are withering some kind of storms in our lives" muses Bong. "And we go through them, but with God's grace there is always the peace and the calm that comes after every storm." This track is another study or demo for the project. Bong still has in mind an acoustic guitar doing the principal melody line and a lush movie-like-soundtrack orchestra in the background. We'll see. Bong himself picked the still clips for...
