From the Fonotone Records 1956-1969: Wild Mountain Ramble... Recorded July 24, 1960, Marshall, Virginia...Fonotone 620 A Fonotone blues side and field recording that nearly cuts Fahey at his own (slide) game. ~ Eddie Dean I found him down in Marshall, Virginia on a record hunt. I went up this little road and there was this old farmhouse with sheds built right into it, junk laying all over the place, kids running around. I asked about records and this guy probably in his 40s brought out a big pile - some Famous Hokum Boys and Big Bill on Banner and Oriole - but they were all broken in pieces. Back in the day as kids we used to come up with exercises to jam bass and guitar to for practice. We'd jam the circle for like ever and it helped with the learning process. This is the same type thing around a blues progression of sorts that typically includes chord progressions, chords variations, rythem varions, a root and a tail, a singular change, a bridge or release, no formal lead part unless it's yelled out to ya to go for it, a picking variation or some other element that keeps ya thinking. We would come up with these ditty's instead of songs because they had no ending, just a round-about jam with bits of improv. I found these kinda sessions invaluable to my whole creative process as they helped me stay focused on a part over a long period of time and got my mind engaged in the creative process. I also...

When I was 8, I absolutely LOVED the game JumpStart Explorers. I would tell my parents all the things I learned from it, and I distinctly remember one occasion when I stopped myself in the middle of telling my parents about it, because I hadn't remembered learning what I was saying! Yes, this is perhaps the only piece of educational software about which I can confidently say, "I learned without realizing it." Now, I don't claim that every kid will love this game and learn as much from it as I did, but I do think it's worth a look. It's somewhat old (from 2001) and is VERY inexpensive. You can buy it (CD-only) for less than $5 online, including shipping. I think this game could make a cool over-the-summer homeschool project - it comes with a LOT of printable activities, so you can have the learning go beyond the computer if you so desire.
