"In 2003 at age 17, Danielle McLaughlin was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma. Less than one year later, she had a recurrence in her left foot, and several weeks before her 18th birthday and the beginning of her senior year of high school she had her left foot amputated. Danielle was devastated but promised herself she would overcome it. She is very passionate about her involvement in the Cancer Community in Los Angeles as well as her participation as an athlete representative for Challenged Athletes Foundation in Southern California. Because of the lonely and isolated feelings she had as a young adult dealing with cancer, Danielle helped re-invigorate a Young Adult Support Group at The Wellness Community (now Cancer Support Community- Benjamin Center). And, at USC Keck Medical Center, she has been a member of the Cancer Survivorship Advisory Council since April 2010, where as the youngest member of the group, she works to communicate the needs facing adolescent and young cancer...

Doug is 25 years old. He suffered a SCI in 2007, when he was just 20 years old. Doug's injury level is T-11 Complete Asia A. This video shows Doug creatively using the Pediatric Gait Harness System II in a tall kneel crawling position. Doug works with Strength Training And Recovery (STAR) in Michigan, an evidence-based intense strengthening and conditioning recovery program for spinal cord injuries (SCI) and amputees. Doug is a sponsored STAR athlete in several adaptive sports activities, from wheelchair tennis to hand-cycling in various marathons. He intends to work developing recreational therapy programs with specific interest in hunting, fishing, and outdoor recreational activities.

The Hawaii-based Aloha Medical Mission brings a 2 week surgical mission to the towns of Talibon and Bacolod in the Visayas archiplago of the Philippines. We perform free surgery on the poor, repairing cleft lips, hernias, prolapse uteri and removing gallstones, myomas, and various ovarian and soft tissue tumors. Bad teeth are pulled, cavities filled, and hand amputees are given free prosthetic LN-4 hands. This video appeared in May, 2012, on ThinkTech Hawaii produced by Jay Fidell.

The latest Ministry of Defence casualty statistics show that nearly 2500 British troops have been injured in Afghanistan since 2001 - a third of them seriously. A growing number of troops are surviving devastating injuries and multiple amputations for the first time in history thanks to more than 5500 aero-medical evacuations combined with the immediacy of medical treatment. Figures just released reveal 559 British troops have been critically or seriously injured in Afghanistan in the 11 years up to this April. The figures do not include all of the 15 wounded personnel currently being treated at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham. IED's have been responsible for the most serious of their injuries. The MOD report shows more than half of all the 311 seriously wounded were hit in 2009 and 2010. Of them 146 had amputations, with 68 described as significant multiple amputations.
