Patients at Headley Court are growing stronger through a gardening project which has culminated in the creation of a display garden at the Chelsea Flower Show. Staff and patients are exhibiting their display, The Courtyard Garden, at the prestigious event for the first time. It will give them the chance to show how successful their horticulture as therapy scheme has become at Headley Court. The Chelsea installation, designed by Geoff Whiten, is an example of a permanent garden that has been built at Headley Court to help patients rehabilitate from their injuries. It is also a collaboration with military charity Gardening Leave, who work with the Armed Forces community to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of personnel using Horticultural Therapy. Medical evidence has shown horticulture provides physical, neurological, cognitive and psychological rehabilitation. It tests patients' motor skills, plus their strength and endurance. There is also evidence to suggest that being in...

A severe drought that has been gripping the rural northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia since October has affected more than two million people and livestock in the area. A 500-kilometer long river that runs through the state's Feira de Santana, supplies water to the entire city and the surrounding rural area. However, it has almost dried up now due to the drought, only leaving several algae-filled puddles that cannot be used to feed cattle. Joao, a local herdsman, takes his cattle to a shallow pond on the upper reaches of the river. "The drought is very serious, and the cattle are starving to death," he said. Cattle can be seen everywhere on the river banks, said Joao, but their numbers have sharply decreased as the water and grass gradually disappear with the receding river. A large number of herdsmen have had to sell their livestock to other areas at lower prices or even abandon them as most cannot afford to buy feed. Joao said he has to feed the cattle with caru, a cactus plant...

2 Billion More Coming for Dinner
A healthy, prosperous future for humanity rests not only on the shoulders of our leaders and policymakers, but also on the farmers and scientists who create the "simple" thing we need most: food. In 2 Billion More Coming to Dinner, a young future farmer and her dad talk about how the old methods of farming achieved as much as they have, and how new techniques could be used to close the gap between how much food we have, and how much food we're going to need as global population approaches 9 billion. Between the fields and the farmhouse, the old farmer and the new teach and tease each other about their roles in feeding the biggest dinner party the planet has ever seen. High-resolution data gathered by the University of Minnesota's Institute on the Environment are rendered as spherical visualizations to show global cropland and pastureland extent, agricultural land devoted to food production and animal feed production, current agricultural productivity, and the gap between current...

George spoke with Linda Moulton Howe, who presented her report on Earth life threats. Linda first touched base on the alarming disappearance of honey bees in the United States. Scientists, beekeepers and government bee specialists have never seen so many deserted honey bee hives as there are now, she reported, and no one knows why. Linda went on to speak about the "Noah's Ark" seed vault project, which is being built inside a cold mountain on the archipelago of Svalbard, Norway, in the Arctic. Construction begins in March and is expected to be finished by October this year. The project is being paid for by the Norwegian government, in affiliation with the UN's Food and Agricultural Organization's Global Crop Diversity Trust. Linda said the fear is that global warming will keep increasing over this century, turning some farm land into desert, flooding other low grounds and generally changing growing seasons, rainfall and insects. She said many plants won't be able to survive the...
