Critics: On Transparency, Obama Actions Don't Match Rhetoric

BY ZACH TOOMBS For the Obama administration, it's been a week of praise for journalists defying oppressive governments overseas. But in a White House press briefing, ABC's Jake Tapper asked how that praise stacks up to the executive branch's handling of journalists at home. "How does that square with the fact that this administration has been so aggressively trying to stop aggressive journalism in the United States by using the Espionage Act to take whistleblowers to court?" In response, Press Secretary Jay Carney referred Tapper to the Department of Justice. The Espionage Act Tapper refers to has been used six times by the Obama administration — the most in all of White House history. The law is meant to protect state secrets, but critics say its use has deterred transparency. In response to Tapper's question, the Government Accountability Project writes: "The Obama administration touts freedom-promoting abroad and protecting whistleblowers at home, but the unprecedented...

How To Go To Heaven: www.jesus-is-savior.com www.strategic-culture.org There is a clear attempt by Western governments and their surrogates, especially Qatar, to dominate the spectrum of international network news outlets. It all began when Qatar-based Al Jazeera became the primary enemy of the Bush administration in its attempt to influence news reporting from war zones like Afghanistan and Iraq. The United States was never really happy with Al Jazeera's Arabic service, having militarily attacked the network's office in Kabul in November 2001 and its Baghdad bureau in April 2003. A leaked 10 Downing Street memorandum from 2005 indicated that President George W. Bush wanted to bomb Al Jazeera's broadcast center in Doha in 2004. But when Al Jazeera English began broadcasting in 2006, what was a nuisance to US propaganda efforts on military battlefields abroad became a problem for the United States at home. Although US cable companies did their best to ban Al Jazeera English from...
