IQC Faculty member Ben Reichardt lectures on quantum algorithms for deciding st-connectivity during the "Recent Progress in Quantum Algorithms" conference. The event was hosted by The Institute for Quantum Computing, and The Perimeter Institute and was held in Waterloo, Ontario, April 11-13th, 2012. Abstract: We give an O(log n) space, query-optimal quantum algorithm for deciding whether two vertices in a graph are connected, given query access to the adjacency matrix. This is an exponential improvement in the space complexity over previous results, and the time and query complexity are also improved under promises that arise in several applications. Although designed using span programs, the algorithm can also naturally be expressed in terms of a reflection about the set of balanced st-flows in the complete graph, an efficiently implementable operation. Citygen is an interactive real-time city generation system. The aim of such a system is to apply procedural techniques to rapidly generate detailed models of cityscapes suitable for use in graphics applications. Most commonly, the underlying road network for the city is generated first and is used as a basis for positioning buildings and other features. The primary road network is represented in the form of a graph that is mapped to the surface of the terrain model and whose nodes can be interactively manipulated by the user. These nodes represent intersections and the edges represent primary roads. Manipulations include dragging and dropping nodes, adding or removing edges, and loading new graphs. These manipulations take place within the context of a graphical interface which provides a real-time display of the terrain mapped road network. We present a system that allows new shapes to be created by blending between shapes taken from a database. We treat the shape as a composition of parts; blending is performed by recombining parts from different shapes according to constraints deduced by shape analysis. The analysis involves shape segmentation, contact analysis, and symmetry detection. The system can be used to rapidly instantiate new models that have similar symmetry and adjacency structure to the database shapes, yet vary in appearance.
