LGO Web Seminar Series Leon Glicksman, Professor of Building Technology and Mechanical Engineering, MIT Opportunities for Energy Efficiency in Buildings Presentation Date: May 16, 2011 Abstract Residential and commercial buildings use 40 percent of US energy and over two thirds of our electricity. There are numerous opportunities to reduce the consumption including advanced technologies as well as traditional measures. These include renewable energy, cool roofs, natural ventilation and continuous commissioning. We will discuss the energy savings and economic implications of these choices. Biography Leon Glicksman is a Professor of Building Technology and Mechanical Engineering. He founded the Building technology Group at MIT 23 years ago. He has carried out research on natural ventilation, thermal insulation, and software tools for energy efficient design. He is a member of the Energy Council of the MIT Energy Initiative.

Some people will never care about a game, or they will never believe a game; indeed, there isseemingly nothing serious about game. The language of game is the opposite of truth. People would rather believe anything rather than what happens in a video game, because the essential feature of game is a tool for entertainment. This game piece also explores relationship between true and fake, between life experience and augmented reality within entertainment. The whole game is a metaphor of our life nowadays in a capitalism dominated era --- full of consumerism and fake beauty.

May 22nd is the opening day of the Art Institute's Roy Lichtenstein retrospective—the first major exhibit since the artist's death in 1997 and the largest gathering of his work ever assembled. Taking five years to curate and consisting of 160 pieces, the show will feature many of his most iconic "Pop Art" images as well as many of his lesser-known abstract works. Lichtenstein took inspiration from comics, cartoons, & even Matisse. He transformed (not copied) these images into his own labor-intensive compositions. Because of this, Lichtenstein faced criticism for much of his career. Her talk will explain how her knitting of Morse code serves to engage a general audience in discussion of communications theory, binary systems, and the history of media. She will also recount the surprising ways that physical production deepened her historical understanding. The talk will highlight the rich answers that can come from explorations that are at once artistic and technical, popular and scholarly, historical and contemporary.
