6.2-liter M156 V8 that powered its predecessor. In its place is the new twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter M157 V8, delivering more power (530 horsepower at 5500 rpm, up from 518 at 6800 rpm) and torque (590 pound-feet at 2000 rpm, up from 465 pound-feet at 5200 rpm) than the outgoing mill. As an added bonus, the direct-injected V8 is more fuel efficient and environmentally cleaner than the outgoing powerplant. Sending the power to the rear wheels is a seven-speed multi-clutch automatic with AMG Speedshift Plus technology and steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for manual control. In standard configuration, the SL63 AMG will crack 60 mph in 4.2 seconds and storm on to an electronically limited top speed of 155 mph. Opt for the optional AMG Performance Package, as was our test vehicle, and maximum engine boost increases from 14.2 psi to 18.5 psi. it's 275 pounds lighter than the model it replaces, thanks largely to the use of high-strength but lightweight aluminum parts. Even so, this bad boy tips the scales at just over 4050 pounds, but never fear -- there's one heck of a powerplant underhood to get this grandaddy moving with a quickness. Just like the entire new crop of AMG products, the SL63 uses Merc's twin-turbocharged 5.5-liter M157 V8, good for 530 horsepower and 593 pound-feet of torque. Tick the box for the optional AMG Performance Package and those numbers increase to 557 and 664(!) respectively. With that additional grunt, the SL63 will shoot to 60 miles per hour in just 4.1 seconds (4.2 without the Performance Pack), on its way to relaxed top speed of 186 miles per hour (non PP-equipped models top out at 155).

We drove from Stuttgart to Hamburg (~700km) within 4 hours. Our maximum speed was slightly over 300km/h, thanks to the PP+ Vmax is more. Mercedes-Benz has announced full details on the 2012 CLS 63 AMG model. New for the CLS 63 is now AMG's 5.5 liter biturbo V8 engine, which replaces the outgoing naturally aspirated 6.3 liter V8. The new 5.5 liter biturbo unit features a peak output of 410 kW (557 PS/550 bhp) and 800 Nm (590 lb-ft) of torque with the AMG Performance package. The standard engine configuration is rated at 386 kW (525 PS / 521 bhp) and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. Both units are mated to the AMG Speedshift MCT 7-speed sport transmission. Fuel economy on the standard CLS 63 AMG now comes in at under 10 liter/100 km (a noteworthy achievement) - with a 9.9 liters per 100 km rating on the European cycle (NEDC).
