The music was composed in after midnight sessions on my new iPad in May of 2012. The imagery is excerpted material from one of the DVDs of my recent project entitled, EMERGENT MUSIC AND VISUAL MUSIC: INSIDE STUDIES. The imagery and the sound are produced by music synthesizer-driven (in this case a Synthi AKS) laser animation captured with a video camera and routed into an audio/video recording system. The drivers, the stereo outputs of the synthesizer, carry audio signals which are, in the final analysis, streaming numbers with ever changing ratios that ease in and out of whole numbers (Pythagorean tuning based on perfect 5ths and octaves). The art game is one of achieving a musical state of dynamic balance by easing in and out of perfect whole number ratios. That results in the playable phase changes that create the virtual objects that are fundamentally Lissajous figures. To me this simple process gives deep insight into the nature of the life process - the nonstop numerical tuning of ephemeral relationships to create forms that change over time. The imagery and sound in this piece are a small slice of a 1984 day-long recording session at Hewlett-Packard in Santa Rosa, CA which included a free flowing and ever changing Real* Electric Symphony collection of San Francisco North Bay electronic musicians and artists. Although the musicians at this gathering were playing newly minted MIDI synthesizers and electric guitars the sound quality of this recording is more akin to the electronic music of the 1940s, 1950s and early 1960s when composers were using gear likely to be found in radio stations and physics labs such as function generators, various filters, switches and tape recording instruments. So the sound is more like what you would hear from a pre-late 1960s "classical" electronic music studio rather than what you would hear from the music synthesizers that emerged in the late 1960s like the Moog, Buchla, ARP and Synthi or later when the sampling mania took over the scene. The laser imagery is produced by a music synthesizer-driven laser animation system captured with a video camera and routed into a video synthesizer. The laser drivers, the stereo outputs of the synthesizer, carry audio signals which are, in the final analysis, streaming numbers with ever changing ratios that are tuned in real time to ease in and out of whole number ratios (Pythagorean tuning based on perfect 5ths and octaves). The art game is one of achieving a musical state of dynamic balance by easing in and out of perfect whole number ratios.
